Women's Water Polo hosts home opener against Cal State East Bay

STOCKTON, Calif. – The Pacific Women's Water Polo team holds its home opener at the Chris Kjeldsen Pool on Saturday, Feb. 5 at noon, against the Cal State East Bay Pioneers.

Between 2007 and 2013, the Tigers and the Pioneers faced off seven times, with the Tigers winning six of those matches and holding a 4-0 record at home.

"We're excited to be full strength tomorrow," said Head Coach James Graham. "We're expecting our team to continue to adapt and get a greater understanding of who we are and how we win games. Each game we play is another data point showing us where we are, and from there we decide what we need to do next to get to our final destination; the idea of winning the GCC and making it to Nationals."

Last weekend, the Tigers opened their season at the Cal Cup in Berkely, losing some tough battles to four other nationally-ranked teams. After four matches in two days, Toula Flavey led the team in goals with eight, Mariana Duarte led the Tigers with 11 points, scoring seven times with four assists, and Hila Futorian had seven goals with two assists.

The Tigers are tied for 15th in CWPA's ranking poll, with UC Santa Barbara. Clara Vulpisi is second in the GCC for saves with 41.

Referencing the tough matches the teams played at the Cal Cup, Graham said it only helps his team get better. "Our goal every year is to try to be the best, and in order to be the best, you need to beat the best. So, we try to schedule the best."
