Tigers Drop WCC Road Opener to BYU

PROVO, Utah – A season-high 14 points from junior Kadie Deaton and an 11-point, five-rebound, five-steal game from sophomore Anaya James was not enough as Pacific (5-8, 0-2) fell to BYU (6-8, 1-2) by a final of 69-51.

Deaton, James and sophomore Elizabeth Elliott all reached double-digits in scoring. Elliott had 10 points with five rebounds and two steals; senior Sam Ashby had seven points and added a team-high two blocks. The Tiger bench outscored the BYU bench 18-7,  Pacific scored 23 points off turnovers.

Pacific scored the first bucket of the game, but BYU responded with a 10-0 run to take a lead that the Cougars would not relinquish. The Tigers scored nine points in the first quarter, with Deaton scoring seven. The Cougars maintained the lead in the second quarter, but a 6-0 run from the Tigers helped to keep Pacific in the game heading into the halftime break, down by 13.

The Tigers continued to battle in the third quarter, as Elliott had her best quarter, scoring three straight layups to bring the Tigers within 11. Back-to-back threes from BYU kept Pacific from making the lead single digits.

A 14-2 scoring run by Pacific in the fourth was created from a solid defensive scheme that forced seven straight BYU turnovers. The Cougar lead was cut down to 11, but BYU responded, scoring the last seven points of the quarter to distance themselves from the Tigers and solidify the win.

The Tigers travel to San Diego to face the Toreros at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 31.
