SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Pacific women's basketball (5–9, 0–3) scored 31 points in the fourth quarter against San Diego (8–7, 2–2). The comeback attempt came short as the Toreros held on for an 84-74 win.
Freshman
Anaya James led the team with 14 points and six assists. Senior
Sam Ashby had 12 points and three steals. With 12 points, junior
Kadie Deaton has reached double figures in two straight games and had a team-high eight made free throws. Sophomore
Elizabeth Elliott had 11 points, and junior
Cecilia Holmberg grabbed six rebounds with eight points.
The Tigers started slow, scoring 12 points in the first quarter, the team's lowest tally of the game. Pacific only took ten shots in the quarter as the San Diego press defense did well in limiting scoring opportunities.
After adjusting at the start of the second quarter, the Tigers put up 17 in the second quarter on just 14 shots. The heavy on-ball defense from the Toreros led to the Tigers taking 11 free throws in the quarter. San Diego shot the ball well, scoring 19 in the quarter and taking a 12-point lead into the half.
San Diego extended the lead in the third, shooting 60% from the field while outscoring the Tigers by seven.
The Tigers scored in bunches in the fourth quarter, starting the quarter with a 6-2 run to start cutting into the lead. Aggressive defense from the Tigers led to a 17-7 run from the Tigers with just under 6:30 to play. Pacific could get within ten points with under three minutes to play. San Diego was able to hold off the Pacific resurgence for the 84-74 win.
