BERKELEY, Calif. – A 33-point first quarter paced the Golden Bears (7-2) in their 83-66 win over Pacific women's basketball (5-5). Sophomore
Anaya James scored 20 points tonight to reach 500 career points in 36 games.
"Defensively, we did not start with the intensity we needed," said Head Coach
Bradley Davis. "Offensively, we were able to execute, but we had to do with the intensity on the defensive end, so they were just able to score at will."
"I thought we changed that and started defending," continued Davis. "We had their play calls, we knew what they were going to do, we did not have the energy, and they took advantage of us not having (Elizabeth) Elliott inside. Kudos to Cass Johnson. She changed that once she came in, in the second.
James led the team in scoring, while junior
Cecilia Holmberg added 13 points, and senior
Sam Ashby scored 11. Junior
Madelene Ennis paced the team with six rebounds, and junior
Liz Smith added four assists. Freshman
Sydney Ward had a season-high three steals in the contest.
The first quarter was one of the highest of the season for the Tigers, as Pacific put up 21 points and Cal scored 33. Ashby and Holmberg scored seven points in the quarter as the Tigers tried to keep pace with the Golden Bears.
The second quarter was the game's lowest scoring for the Tigers, heading into halftime down 20.
The Tigers bounced back in the third, as James scored seven, and the Tigers outscored the Golden Bears by 11 points to cut the deficit to single digits. Pacific could not cut away more of the lead as Cal rebounded and pulled away, outscoring the Tigers by six in the fourth to secure the 17-point win.
The Tigers are back at the Alex G. Spanos Center at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 17, to take on Saint Mary's in the first WCC contest of the season.
