Men's Golf in the Hunt After First Round of Saint Mary's Invitational

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – The Pacific men's golf team sits in 13th place after shooting a 12-over-par 296 in the first round of the Saint Mary's Invitational Monday afternoon at Poppy Hills Golf Course.

A handful of West Coast Conference teams sit atop the leaderboard, with San Diego leading the 16-team field after shooting a first-round nine-under-par 275. Loyola Marymount and Santa Clara round out the top three spots, respectively, while Saint Mary's completed the first round in sixth place.

"We didn't get off the best start we wanted," Head Coach John Cook stated after the round. "We had a couple of bad breaks, and nothing seemed to go our way all day."

Petr Janik led the Tigers throughout the first day, completing the round in a tie for 29th place after shooting a one-over-par 72. Janik tallied four of the team's nine birdies and shot a team-low one-under par on the par 5's.

Maverick Pavletich had a solid first round to begin the tournament, shooting a two-over-par 73. Pavletich tallied three birdies and 10 pars to keep the Tigers in contention heading into the second round.

"Our goal is to continue climbing up the leaderboard," Cook continued. "We're going to regroup tomorrow and do the best we can."

Pacific tees off the second round of the Saint Mary's Invitational at 9:37 a.m. tomorrow, Tuesday, Nov. 1, as the Tigers look to move up the leaderboard.
