SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Following four-run victory to open the series on Friday afternoon, the Pacific baseball team (13-28, 3-14) was unable to get back in the win column against Santa Clara (14-26, 7-16) on Saturday, falling to the Broncos in eleven innings, 7-6.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- Wasting no time, the Tigers got on the board in the top of the first on a triple from senior Alex LeForestier as sophomore Thomas Gavello came across to give Pacific the early 1-0 lead.
- Moving into the second, the Broncos responded to tie the game at one on an RBI single from Ryan McCarthy in the bottom of the second. However, the Tigers answered right back in the top of the third when Gavello laced an RBI single down into right field to plate senior Wyatt Hoffman and give UOP the lead, 2-1.
- One inning later, Santa Clara even the ballgame again on a solo home run from Tony Boetto, making the score 2-2 through four innings complete. In the home half of the fifth, the Broncos took their first advantage of the afternoon on an RBI single from leadoff hitter Austin Reyes, jumping ahead of the Tigers, 3-2.
- With no action on either side in the sixth, Pacific battled back yet again to go in front, 5-3, on to a three-run blast from junior Jeremy Lea in the top of the seventh.
- Denying the Bronco attack in the eight, SCU continued the seesaw affair in the eighth by tying the contest with two runs on three hits. Shortly thereafter, UOP loaded the bases with no outs before senior James McClenaghan drove home senior Charles Middleton on a sacrifice fly to give Pacific their fourth different lead of the game, 6-5. Ultimately, Santa Clara defended their home field once again, tying the score at six on a solo home run from Mike Bowes in the bottom of the ninth.
- In extras, the Tigers were only able to notch one hit in their two plate appearances before the Broncos loaded the bases with no outs themselves in the home half of the eleventh. Evening the series, Coleman Brigman lined a sacrifice fly to right field to push across the game-winning run as Santa Clara squeezed out the walk-off victory, 7-6.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Finishing two-for-five at the dish, junior James Arakawa extended his hitting streak to a team-high twelve consecutive games on Saturday afternoon.
- Despite the loss, five different Tigers notched two hits against the Broncos: Arakawa, Gavello, LeForestier, Lea and McClenaghan.
- On the mound, sophomore Hunter Hayes logged his fifth outing of at least 4.0 innings pitched, totaling a final line of 4.0 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 1 BB and 3 K's.
