Pacific Handles Santa Clara to Notch First WCC Series Victory

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Hungry and eager to cross it off their list, the Pacific baseball team (14-28, 4-14) notched their first series victory of WCC play this season by handling Santa Clara (14-27, 7-17), 11-3, in the finale between the two programs on Sunday afternoon.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • After falling to the Broncos in walk-off fashion on Saturday, the Tigers came out swinging with vengeance as they jumped out to a 4-0 lead after their first appearances at the plate. In the top of the first, Pacific ripped three consecutive singles to begin the game as senior Charles Middleton singled home sophomore Thomas Gavello for the first run of the afternoon. Following another hit and a few blunders from the Broncos that allowed the Tigers to add three runs, UOP held a four-run advantage through the first inning of play.
  • Although Santa Clara would get on the board with their first run in the bottom of the third, senior Hunter Schilperoort was fairly successful on the mound otherwise, striking out five batters through three innings of work to help Pacific stay on top, 4-1, moving into the fourth.
  • Remaining close, the Broncos trimmed their deficit to one, 4-3, with two runs on three hits and one Tiger error in the bottom of the fourth. With no action on either side in the fifth, Pacific answered by adding two runs on three hits of their own in the top of the sixth to stay in front, 6-3, heading into the seventh.
  • Shortly thereafter, the Tigers extended their lead to five, 8-3, with two more runs in the top of the seventh, which was highlighted by an RBI single up the middle from senior Joe Fitzhugh. Keeping their foot on the gas, Pacific would tack on their final three runs in the eighth on three hits as the rally was led by Gavello's ninth home run of the season to begin the inning.
  • Locking down the Broncos with two innings of scoreless relief to close out the game, junior Michael Defelippi secured the victory for the Tigers by a final score of 11-3 to record Pacific's first series win in conference play since Apr. 2019 against Santa Clara.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Delivering to begin the rubber match, Schilperoort tossed his second longest outing of the year on Sunday, finishing with a final line of 4.0 IP, 6 H, 3 ER and 6 K's. Additionally, junior Dylan Pottgieser notched his first win of 2021 with 3.0 innings of scoreless baseball, striking out four and allowing just one hit along the way.
  • Coming through at the top of the lineup, Pacific's first five hitters in the lineup combined for eight hits and four RBI in total, which was led by Gavello's 3-for-5 performance. Overall, the second year infielder also scored two runs and drove in one in the win.
  • With the victory, the Tigers have defeated the Broncos in five of their last six matchups as Pacific swept the season series in 2019 before taking two of three form Santa Clara this weekend.
