LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Despite dropping the series opener on Friday, the Pacific baseball team (16-31, 6-17) bounced back on Saturday evening against Loyola Marymount (19-29, 12-14) by hanging on to take down the Lions, 3-2.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- With both starting pitchers setting down the opposition through the first two innings, Pacific got on the board first on a solo home run from senior Wyatt Hoffman in the top of the third to jump out to an early 1-0 lead.
- One inning later, the Tigers used the long ball to their advantage again as junior Jeremy Lea launched his sixth big fly of the season, this time a two-run shot, to push the score to 3-0 in favor of UOP.
- Moving into the bottom half of the fourth, the Lions loaded the bases before senior Henrik Reinertsen came on in relief of starter Hunter Schilperoort. Although a run would come across on the play, the right hander got LMU to ground into a double play in the first batter he faced. Following suit, Reinertsen induced another ground out to end the inning and deny the Lion rally, keeping the Tigers on top, 3-1, through four innings.
- Two innings later, Pacific got two runners on as seniors Charles Middleton and Alex LeForestier laced back-to-back single to begin the sixth, but unfortunately the Tiger offense could not drive home the two shortly thereafter.
- Delivering out of the bullpen, Reinertsen would give way to junior Zach Patterson in the seventh, who experienced little trouble until the bottom of the ninth. In the inning, the Lions got two runners on to begin their turn at the plate with a double and a walk, but Patterson quickly recorded two outs right after. After a hit by pitch loaded the bases, Patterson was relieved by redshirt senior Nick Swanson. Unable to find his rhythm on the mound, Swanson also logged a walk and hit by pitch before giving way to senior Joe Solomon.
- Bearing down when it mattered most, senior Joe Solomon got the LMU third baseman to fly out to right field on the first pitch he threw as the Tigers hung on to secure the one-run victory, 3-2, and even the series against the Lions.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Impressively, LeForestier extended his on-base streak to 17 consecutive games as well as his hitting streak to 9 games by finishing 2-for-4 with one run scored on Saturday.
- For Lea, it was his fifth two-plus RBI performance as the third year Tiger now is solely in second on the team with six home runs. For Hoffman, the shortstop crushed his third long ball of the season to tie junior Ben Nemivant for fourth in the department.
- Locking down the Lions out of the bullpen, Reinersten and Patterson combined to go 5.2 innings against LMU as the duo allowed just one run and three total hits between the two. Notably, Solomon notched his first collegiate save by stranding the final baserunners in the ninth.
- With the win, Pacific improves to 13-3 as a team when outhitting their opponents and 6-2 when hitting two or more home runs.
