Rally Falls Short Against Cougars in Game Two

STOCKTON, Calif. – Fresh off of a series-opening win, the Pacific baseball team (15-29, 5-15) was unable to take game two from BYU (20-25, 12-11) on Friday evening as the Cougars shutout the Tigers 5-0.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • With both pitchers retiring the side in order in the first, which included two strikeouts from senior Hayden Pearce, BYU got on the board in the top of the second on a leadoff home run from right fielder Cole Gambill to take a 1-0 lead.
  • Unable to find much rhythm at the plate in the early going, Pacific did not register their first hit of the contest until the bottom of the fourth on a single from senior Charles Middleton.
  • Moving into the seventh following no action on either side in the fifth or sixth, first baseman Freddy Achecar poked an RBI single of his own through the left side in the Cougars turn at the plate to push the BYU advantage to 2-0 at the seventh inning stretch.
  • In the final two innings of play, Pacific threatened offensively, but ultimately could not piece together a rally. After adding one run on two hits in the seventh, the Cougars plated their final runs of the ballgame on one hit and two Tiger errors in the ninth.
  • Aiming for some late magic, UOP was able to get runners to the corners in the home half of the eighth, but seemingly was denied by the BYU bullpen. Evening up the series with a dominant performance from starter Jack Sterner, the Cougars hung on to blank the Tigers by a final score of 5-0.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Despite the loss, Pearce registered a career-high 7.2 innings pitched as the right hander allowed 3 runs on 5 hits while also striking out four batters.
  • Attempting to limit the damage out of the bullpen, junior Dylan Pottgieser logged his second straight appearance without allowing an earned run, striking out one batter in 1.1 innings pitched on Friday.
  • Although junior James Arakawa and sophomore Thomas Gavello were unable to extend their hitting streaks, Middleton pushed his team-high reached base streak to 22 consecutive games with his single in the fourth inning. Additionally, senior Alex LeForestier sits close behind his fellow classmate as the corner infielder has reached base in 14 straight games himself.
UP NEXT:
Game three of the series is set for tomorrow, Saturday, May 15 at 12:00 pm PST. Senior Hunter Schilperoort is slated to toe the rubber for the Tigers while right hander Bryce Robison will oppose the lefty for BYU. Live streaming and live statistics links are available via the team's schedule page on pacifictigers.com.
