Tigers Can't Find Rhythm in Rubber Match

STOCKTON, Calif. – Aiming for their second consecutive conference series victory, the Pacific baseball team (15-30, 5-16) was unable to take the rubber match from BYU (21-25, 13-11) on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Cougars, 6-0, at Klein Family Field.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Striking first in the opening frame, BYU got on the board with an RBI double from right fielder Cole Gambill to take an early 1-0 lead.
  • As both starters settled in during the second inning, the Cougars jumped out to a 2-0 advantage in the top of the third as Gambill continued to remain hot at the plate by hitting his second home run in as many days.
  • With no action on either side in the innings to follow, BYU extended their lead to six with four runs on four hits and one Tiger error in the top of the sixth, which was highlighted by a two-run triple from center fielder Mitch McIntyre.
  • Despite a single from junior James Arakawa in the first, the Tigers struggled again offensively in the middle innings as they did not record their second hit of the contest until a line drive single into right field from sophomore Thomas Gavello in the bottom of the sixth.
  • Unable to conjure much momentum at the dish, Pacific was able to get two baserunners on in the home half of the ninth, but right hander Reid McLaughlin would come on in relief to slam the door and secure the shutout victory for the Cougars by a final score of 6-0. Impressively, BYU starter Bryce Robison finished just one out shy of a complete game shutout as he tallied a final line of 8.2 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 2 BB and 6 K's.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • For Pacific, senior Hunter Schilperoort delivered the second longest outing of his career as a Tiger, going 5.1 innings while finishing with 5 H, 3 ER, 1 BB and 4 K's.
  • Out of the bullpen, junior Michael Defelippi logged his fourth consecutive scoreless appearance with 1.0 inning of relief on Saturday.
  • With his single in the bottom of the first, Arakawa pushed his current hitting and reached base streaks to a season-long 16 games. Additionally, senior Alex LeForestier is close behind the third year Tiger having reached base in 15 straight contests.
