Pacific Falls Late to USF in Game Two

STOCKTON, Calif. – Aiming to push their winning streak to three games, the Pacific baseball team (12-26, 2-12) fell victim to a late rally by San Francisco (17-20, 12-8) on Saturday evening, falling to the Dons, 6-4, at Klein Family Field.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Although the Tigers recorded the first two hits of the ballgame in the bottom of the first on singles from sophomore Thomas Gavello and senior Charles Middleton, it was the Dons who struck first with one run on three hits in the top of the second to take an early 1-0 lead.
  • One inning later, USF extended their advantage to three when they tacked on two runs on one hit and one Pacific error in the third. However, the Tigers answered back in the home half of the inning on a solo home run from Gavello to trim their deficit to 3-1.
  • Pushing across another run, the Dons jumped back on top by three on a sacrifice fly from shortstop Jack Winkler in the fifth. Responding shortly thereafter once again, Pacific closed the gap to 4-3 with two runs on two hits in the bottom of the fifth, which included a safety squeeze from senior Alex LeForestier followed by an RBI single from junior Ben Nemivant.
  • With neither side doing any damage in the sixth, the Tigers evened the contest when junior Jeremy Lea lined a two-out RBI single into right center field to plate LeForestier in the bottom of the seventh. Heading into the eighth, the score remained knotted at four.
  • After junior Jackson Vaughan came on in relief of senior Hunter Schilperoort in the top of the eighth, pinch hitter Jacob Munoz delivered a two-RBI single for the Dons that would prove to be the game-winning hit.
  • Unable to conjure any momentum at the plate in the final two innings, Jesse Barron locked down the win for San Francisco on the mound to secure the 6-4 victory and even the series against the Tigers.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Providing consistency at the top of the lineup, Gavello launched his team-leading seventh home run of the season on Saturday while Middleton pushed his hitting streak to a team-high 14 games with his single in the first. Additionally, junior James Arakawa finished 2-for-5 with one run scored to push his hitting streak to nine games as well.
  • For Nemivant, the Scottsdale, Ariz. native notched his tenth two-hit performance of the year against the Dons on Saturday.
  • On the mound, senior Joe Solomon logged his fourth scoreless appearance in his last six outings, walking one batter and striking out one in 0.2 innings of work.

UP NEXT:
Pacific will wrap up their three-game set against the Dons on Sunday, May 2 at 1:00 pm PST at Klein Family Field.
