Tigers Walk-off Dons to Take Game One

STOCKTON, Calif. – Continuing their homestand after a historic victory over No. 18 Stanford on Wednesday, the Pacific baseball team (12-25, 2-11) recorded their second straight win in thrilling fashion with an 8-7 walk-off victory over San Francisco (16-20, 11-8) on Friday night at Klein Family Field.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • With both starters turning away the opposition in the first two innings of play, Pacific used three errors from USF in the home half of the third to push across their first two runs of the evening.
  • Shortly thereafter, the Dons responded with two runs on three hits of their own in the top of the fourth to even the game at two. Answering right back, the Tigers plated two in their at the dish in the fourth as senior Wyatt Hoffman doubled home classmate James McClenaghan before junior James Arakawa singled home Hoffman just two batters later. Through four innings, Pacific remained on top, 4-2.
  • In the top of the fifth, San Francisco chipped away at their deficit with one run on one hit, but the Tigers doubled off a USF baserunner following a sacrifice fly to end the half inning. Unfortunately, the Dons would knot the score at four in the sixth on an RBI double from shortstop Jack Winkler.
  • Losing no faith, Pacific once again answered the call with three runs on four hits in the bottom of the sixth, which included an RBI single from senior Charles Middleton and sacrifice fly from junior Ben Nemivant. Coming on in relief of starter Hayden Pearce, junior Marvcus Guarin shut the door on a rally from the Dons in the seventh as the Tigers maintained their advantage at the seventh-inning stretch, 7-4.
  • Moving through the eighth and into the ninth, fifth year student Nick Swanson toed the rubber in search of his fifth save of the season, but was ultimately unable to lock down the victory for Pacific as he loaded the bases before giving way to junior Zach Patterson. Inheriting a sticky situation, Patterson walked the first batter he faced as USF tied the contest at seven.
  • Unable to find the game-winning hit in the bottom of the ninth, Patterson returned to the mound and experienced trouble out of the gates to begin the tenth as the leadoff batter quickly reached third following a Tiger fielding error and a balk from the right hander. However, the Livermore native would buck down when it mattered most, striking out two of the next three USF batters to keep the score even at seven.
  • Delivering the magic with no hesitation, Hoffman singled through the left side to begin the home half of the tenth before sophomore Thomas Gavello laced a triple down the right field line to plate Hoffman and walk-off the Dons in game one, 8-7.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • With his RBI single in the sixth, Middleton extended his team-leading on-base streak to 15 straight games as well as pushing his hitting streak to 13 consecutive contests. Closing in on double digits, Arakawa is second on the Tigers with a hit in eight straight.
  • Coming through when called upon, Hoffman finished with a season-high three hits and four runs scored in five at-bats against the Dons.
  • For Patterson, Friday's win marked the second of his career as a Tiger and his first since Apr. 17 against Long Beach State. In his 2.0 innings pitched, the right hander's three total strikeouts also tied his season-high.
