BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – After cruising in victory to open the series on Friday afternoon, the Pacific baseball team (5-3) split their doubleheader with CSU Bakersfield (2-4) on Saturday, taking down the Roadrunners, 8-5, in game one before falling 10-9 on a two-run walk-off homerun in the bottom of the ninth in game two.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
Game One-
- Getting on the board, the Roadrunners struck first on an RBI single from Tyler Jorgensen in the home half of the first inning to take the early 1-0 lead.
- With the next three innings seeing little action from either team, the Tigers did not notch their first run of the contest until the top of the fifth. Leading off with a double down the left field line, junior Zach Patterson crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly from senior Wyatt Hoffman, knotting the game at one.
- Returning to the lineup without skipping a beat, 2021 All-WCC Preseason selection Charles Middleton crushed his first home run of the spring just one inning later, giving Pacific a 3-1 lead in the top of the sixth on a two-run bomb off the left field fence.
- However, CSUB responded shortly thereafter, tying the game themselves on a double by CJ Rivers in the bottom of the seventh.
- Erupting at the right time, the Tigers bounced back by driving on five runs on four hits in the top of the ninth to regain their advantage, 8-3.
- Although the Roadrunners would tack on two runs in the bottom of the ninth in an attempt at a late comeback, Pacific would hold on to secure the win by a final score of 8-5.
Game Two-
- Flipping the script in the second contest, the Roadrunners jumped out to a 6-0 lead through the first three innings complete.
- Following a double from Middleton and a single from sophomore Thomas Gavello to begin the fourth, Patterson drove home Pacific's first run of the contest on a double play ball.
- Subsequently, senior Alex LeForestier walked, junior James Arakwa reached on an error and junior Ben Nemivant single into centerfield to load the bases. Coming up clutch, Hoffman cleared the bags and plated all three runners on a three-RBI double to left center, cutting the Tiger deficit to 6-4. One batter later, senior James McClenaghan notched an RBI of his own with a single through the right side to drive home Hoffman, trimming the Roadrunner lead to just one through four innings, 6-5.
- In both the bottom of the fifth and sixth, CSUB added insurance runs to extend their lead to three, holding an 8-5 advantage over the Tigers heading into the seventh.
- Never counting themselves out, Pacific evened the game at eight by pushing across three runs in the top of the inning, which included RBI knocks from Arakawa and Nemivant.
- Finding some late game magic for the second time on the day, UOP took the lead, 9-8, in the top of the ninth as Patterson came around to score on a Joe Fitzhugh RBI single.
- Unfortunately, the Tigers would fall victim to heroics from CSUB in the home half of the inning as Jorgensen continued his hot day at the dish by launching a two-run walk-off home run off fifth year student Nick Swanson to steal game three from Pacific, 10-9.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Showing his promise yet again, sophomore Hunter Hayes recorded the first quality start of his collegiate career against CSUB as the right hander exited the game with a a final line of 6.0 IP, 3 ER, 3 BB and 2 K.
- Despite allowing two runs to cross the plate during his time on the rubber, sophomore Grant Stevens delivered 3.0 innings of relief on Saturday, collecting two strikeouts with neither run being earned overall in game one.
- Playing in his first game in almost a full calendar year, Middleton impressed in his first action of 2021, finishing 3-for-8 on Saturday with three runs scored, two RBI and two walks.
- Finding their rhythm with the bat, Hoffman (4) and Fitzhugh (3) drove home seven runs combined on the day for the Tigers. Displaying his patience, LeForestier collected four base-on-balls against the Roadrunners in games two and three of the series.
- Serving as a catalyst for the Pacific offense, Patterson also scored four runs on Saturday, going 3-of-8 at the dish as well.
