Pacific Drops Pitcher's Duel in Series Finale

Box Score BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Winning two of the first three games over the weekend, the Pacific baseball team (5-4) could not secure the series victory on Sunday afternoon over CSU Bakersfield (3-4), falling to the Roadrunners, 2-1, in a pitcher's duel at Hardt Field.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Attempting to kickstart early offense, junior Jeremy Lea notched the first hit of the ballgame as the second batter in the top of the first, but neither team would find much momentum to begin the contest.
  • With both starters locked in a duel,  Pacific would tally one hit in the top of the first four innings, but could not piece together a rally to drive home the runner each time.
  • Fast forwarding to the seventh, junior James Arakawa would reach on a fielder's choice before senior Joe Fitzhugh plated the game's first run on an RBI double into left field, which scored Arakawa to give the Tigers the 1-0 advantage. Although senior James McClenaghan reached on an infield single two batters later, UOP was only able to push across one run in the inning.
  • Aiming to defend their home field, the Roadrunners responded in the bottom of the eighth with two runs on three hits against reliever Jackson Vaughan, taking a 2-1 lead heading into the top of the ninth.
  • Despite one last single from Fitzhugh, senior Wyatt Hoffman would fly out to center field to end the contest, as CSU Bakersfield used a late rally to squeeze past Pacific and split the four-game series with the Tigers.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Finding his stride at the plate, Fitzhugh is now on a four-game hitting streak and has also recorded at least one RBI in each of these games as well.
  • Alongside Fitzhugh, Lea also notched his fourth two-hit effort of the season on Sunday afternoon.
  • Starting his third outing of the year, senior Hunter Schilperoort turned in his best performance yet, finishing with an impressive final line of 5.2 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 1 BB and 7 K's.
