USD Tops Pacific in Game One

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Anxious to break their four-game skid, the Pacific baseball team (7-12, 0-4) was unable to get back in the win column in the series opener against San Diego (15-4, 3-1) on Friday evening, falling to the Toreros, 3-1, at Fowler Park.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • With neither team scoring in the first, senior Joe Fitzhugh plated the first run of the ballgame on an RBI double to left center field in the top of the second as sophomore Thomas Gavello reached on an error before coming across on the hit to give Pacific the early 1-0 advantage.
  • One inning later, San Diego responded to even the game on a solo home run by Paul Kunst, tying the contest at one all through three innings complete.
  • In the following innings, both starters would settle in until junior Dylan Pottgieser replaced senior Hayden Pearce on the mound in the bottom of the sixth after the Tiger starter allowed two runners to reach the corners. Shortly thereafter, the Toreros took their first lead of the evening on an RBI single into right center field from Cody Jefferis to put the Toreros on top, 2-1.
  • Although the Tiger bullpen only allowed one hit in the seventh, San Diego tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI double from Dusti Allen to go on top by two.
  • Unable to find any late magic at the plate down the stretch, Pacific would fall to USD by two runs in the series opener as the Toreros took game one by a final score of 3-1.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • After tossing 3.0 scoreless innings at Fresno State on Wednesday, sophomore Grant Stevens logged his fourth straight scoreless appearance on the mound with 0.2 innings of work on Friday.
  • Turning into one of the most feared hitters in the conference, sophomore James Arakawa recorded the first intentional walk of his career in the contest. Overall, the second baseman has now increased his team-leading batting average to .410 after going 1-for-1 with the IBB against the Toreros.
  • At the plate, senior Charles Middleton notched at least one hit for the third consecutive game as the outfielder aims to find his stride after recently returning to the Pacific lineup following a wrist injury.

UP NEXT:
Game two of the three game series is scheduled for 4:00 pm PST on Saturday. Sophomore Hunter Hayes is set to take the ball for the Tigers while right hander Conner Thurman is slated to toe the rubber for the Toreros.
