Pacific Drops Close Contest in Fresno

FRESNO, Calif. – After taking down the Bulldogs last week in their first midweek matchup of the season, the Pacific baseball team (7-11, 0-3) was unable to repeat their success against Fresno State on Wednesday afternoon, falling 5-4 in a tight contest at Pete Bieden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Getting out to a strong start, the Tigers scored first on an RBI groundout from junior Jeremy Lea in the bottom of the first as fellow classmate James Arakawa came around to score to give Pacific the early 1-0 advantage.
  • One inning later, UOP tacked on two more runs on three hits in the top of the second, one of which came on an RBI single from senior Wyatt Hoffman to put the Tigers on top 3-0.
  • In the top of the fourth, sophomore Thomas Gavello launched a home run for the second consecutive game, extending Pacific's lead to 4-0 through three and a half innings complete. However, Fresno State would respond with three runs of their own on four hits in the bottom of the fourth to trim their deficit to 4-3.
  • Shortly thereafter, the Bulldogs even the score at four in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single from first baseman Ryan Higgins.
  • With both sides denying each other at the plate in the next two innings, Fresno State plated what would wind up to be the game-winning run on an RBI double from second baseman Josh Lauck in the bottom of the seventh.
  • Defending their home field, the Bulldogs would turn away the Tigers in the eighth and ninth as Robbie Peters locked down his first save of the year to secure the 5-4 victory for Fresno State.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Hitting his stride at the plate, Gavello has now gone deep in back-to-back games and is second on the team with two home runs.
  • In his first action since Mar. 5 at CSU Bakersfield, sophomore transfer Aidan Selfridge finished two-for-three at the plate with one run scored as well as recording his first stolen base as a Tiger.
  • On the mound, sophomore Grant Stevens delivered to begin the game, going 3.0 innings while allowing just one hit en route to his third consecutive scoreless appearance for the Orange & Black.

UP NEXT:
Pacific will continue their road trip by heading south again as they are set for a three game conference series at San Diego this upcoming weekend. All three contests will be aired live on the WCC Network at game time as live stats will also be available via pacifictigers.com.
