STOCKTON, Calif. – Beginning conference play for the first time since the 2019 season, the Pacific baseball team (7-8) was unable to extend their winning streak to three games on Friday night, falling to the Portland Pilots (8-8) in the series opener at Klein Family Field.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- Beginning the scoring, Portland got on the board in the top of the first on an RBI double from first baseman Sam Brown to take the early 1-0 lead.
- In the following innings, the Pilots would tack on three more runs as they held a 4-0 advantage through four innings complete.
- Two innings later, senior Joe Solomon came on in relief of starter Hayden Pearce, but Portland added three more runs in the top of the sixth to extend their lead to 7-0.
- Aiming to chip away at the deficit, junior Ben Nemivant chopped an RBI single up the middle in the home half of the sixth to plate senior Wyatt Hoffman for Pacific's first run of the contest.
- In the bottom of the seventh, senior Joe Fitzhugh delivered a pinch-hit sacrifice fly to score sophomore Thomas Gavello and trim the Pilot deficit to 7-2 through seven innings.
- Unfortunately, this is as close as the Tigers would get on Friday night as Portland pushed across five additional runs in the final two innings to secure a victory in game one by a final score of 12-2.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Although junior James Arakawa's 13-game hitting streak game to an end on Friday, Nemivant has now started a streak of his own as the outfielder has notched at least one hit in his last four contests.
- On the mound, senior Landon Curtis recorded his fourth consecutive scoreless appearance out of the bullpen, notching 1.0 inning in relief while striking out two Pilots along the way.
