Four-Run Seventh Pushes Hornets Past Tigers

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Returning to action after their original series was postponed last weekend due to an inconclusive COVID-19 test result, the Pacific baseball team (3-2) fell victim to a late rally by Sacramento State (5-2) on Monday night, falling to the Hornets, 8-5, at John Smith Field.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Opening the scoring, junior Jeremy Lea launched his first long ball of the year over the left field fence in the top of the first, giving Pacific the early 1-0 lead to begin the ballgame.
  • Just one inning later, the Hornets responded on a two-RBI single up the middle from Jack Bollengier to jump on top 2-1 through two innings complete.
  • Shortly thereafter, the Tigers would answer with three runs of their own in the top of the third despite collecting just one hit in the inning, regaining their advantage, 4-2.
  • Looking to battle back, Sacramento State knotted the score at four on a two-run home run Martin Vincelli-Simard in the home half of fourth.
  • Driving in his first run of the season, senior Joe Fitzhugh plated junior James Arakawa in the top of the sixth on a single up the middle as the Tigers retook the lead, 5-4, heading into the seventh.
  • However, the Hornets followed suit by tacking on four runs in their turn at the plate in the seventh inning, extending their lead to 8-5 with the final two innings remaining to play.
  • Locking down the Tigers out of the bullpen, Stone Churby came on in relief for Sacramento State to notch his third save of the season as the Hornets hung on to take down Pacific in their lone makeup game by a final score of 8-5.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Continuing his hot start out of the bullpen, junior Marvcus Guarin recorded another inning of scoreless relief work for the Tigers on Monday night. Overall, the right hander has tallied 5.0 innings without giving up a run so far in the Orange & Black, totaling three strikeouts and zero walks in three appearances.
  • At the dish, Arakawa also continued his torrid start as the Walnut, Calif. native went 2-for-3 against the Hornets with one RBI and one run scored. Overall, the middle infielder currently paces the Tigers with a team-leading .471 batting average through the team's first five games.
  • Making his mark, Lea has now notched at least one RBI in four consecutive contests for UOP.
  • On the basepaths, seniors James McClenaghan stole second in the top of the fourth inning to record his first stolen bag of 2021.
