BERKELEY, Calif. – The Pacific baseball team (0-1) could not close out their season opener on Friday night at Evans Diamond, surrendering two runs in the bottom of the ninth as the California Bears (1-0) walked-off over the Tigers, 4-3.
In what proved to be a low scoring affair in both teams' first contest of the 2021 season, Pacific left six runners on base and could not find their groove offensively after a three-run third inning.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- Kickstarting the scoring, Cal got on the board first with a single from Darren Baker followed by a two-run home run from Dylan Beavers in the bottom of the first, taking an early 2-0 lead.
- However, senior Hayden Pearce would settle in after that blemish, as the right hander would not allow a hit the rest of his time on the mound.
- In the top of the third, the Tigers flipped the script and tallied three runs, two of which came on a single into left field from senior outfield James McClenaghan. Soon thereafter, junior Ben Nemivant singled on a bunt down the third base line to bring home the go-ahead run and give Pacific the 3-2 advantage.
- Keeping his team in line for the victory in the innings to follow, Pearce would be relieved by junior Jackson Vaughan in the bottom of the sixth as the 5'7" right hander made his debut in the Orange & Black.
- With neither lineup able to string together hits as the final innings approached, Pacific remained on top, 3-2, heading into the bottom of the ninth.
- After senior Landon Curtis would allow the first two batters to reach base, fifth year student Nick Swanson came on to stop the bleeding. Unfortunately, two walks and a balk by the Stockton native by would allow the Bears to even the game at 3 on a groundout double play.
- Finally piecing together a timely hit, Cal walked off over the Tigers just two batters later as Baker scored again on a single from Connor Mack to secure the 4-3 Opening Day victory for the Bears.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Despite the two hits in the first innings, Pearce seemed almost untouchable on the mound on Friday, finishing with a final line of 5.0 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 K, 1 HBP, 0 BB.
- In his first action as a Tiger, Vaughan pitched 2.0 scoreless innings, giving up only one hit while also notching three strikeouts and three walks.
- Offensively, McClenaghan was the lone bright spot for the Pacific, finishing 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBI. Nemivant also recorded two hits in four at-bats for UOP.
