STOCKTON, Calif. - The Pacific men's basketball team (17-8, 5-4) defeated San Diego (8-16, 1-8), 66-58, on Saturday night at the Alex G. Spanos Center.
Tallying their seventeenth overall victory of the season, the Tigers have now officially secured a winning record for the 2019-20 season, marking the first time Pacific has reached this achievement since 2013-14.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
First Half-
- Less than two minutes into play, the Tigers took an early lead (4-1) on back-to-back jumpers from graduate transfer Austin Vereen and freshman Daniss Jenkins.
- After the Toreros would tie the game at four, junior Broc Finstuen and sophomore Jahbril Price-Noel combined to score the next eight points as Pacific stayed on top of San Diego, 13-6, at the 11:15 mark.
- Following a three-pointer by junior Justin Moore, Pacific led USD, 16-6, as the midway point of the half approached.
- Despite a quick run by San Diego, UOP scored on consecutive layups by Finstuen and Moore to close out the half.
- Heading into the locker room, the Tigers led the Toreros, 32-24.
Second Half-
- Aiming to defend their home court, senior Jahlil Tripp nailed a pair of free throws at 17:06 to keep Pacific out in front of USD by eight, 34-26.
- Coming up clutch when called upon, Price-Noel netted eight straight points for the Tigers around the midway point of the second half, giving UOP a 44-36 lead with 8:55 remaining in regulation.
- Grabbing a new season and career high 11 rebounds, junior Amari McCray scored his lone field goal at 7:23 to keep the Tigers on top by five.
- Although the Toreros would make it close, Pacific used two made free throws from Jenkins, Tripp and McCray to solidify their lead (61-55) with less than one minute on the clock.
- Ultimately, Pacific swept their weekend homestand by taking down San Diego by a final score of 66-58.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Notching their twelfth win at home, junior Broc Finstuen was named the City of Stockton Human Resources Hardworking Player of the Game after finishing with 11 points, 5 rebounds and one assist on 4-of-5 shooting from the field.
- Providing a spark off the bench, sophomore Jahbril Price-Noel poured in a team-high 16 points in 25 minutes played for UOP.
- McCray established a new season and career high with 11 total rebounds.
- The Tigers led the Toreros in second chance points. (12-6), bench points (43-18), points in the paint (32=26) and fast break points (12-11).
UP NEXT:
Pacific will look to extend their winning streak to three games when they travel to the city of San Francisco to face the Dons of USF on Thursday, Feb. 6. The game will begin at 8:00 pm and will be broadcast live on The WCC Network.
