Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Pacific Tops Dons in SF For First Time Since 2007

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - For the first time since Dec. 5, 2007, the Pacific men's basketball team (18-8, 6-4) defeated San Francisco (16-9, 5-5) at War Memorial Gymnasium, this time by a final score of 60-48.

Pushing their win streak to three straight, the Tigers avenged their loss on Jan. 11 to split the season series with the Dons.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:

First Half-
  • Out of the gates, both teams would struggle to find their first basket in the opening minutes, with the Tigers not scoring until a dunk by junior James Hampshire at the 17:07 mark.
  • Aiming to take the early lead, Pacific jumped on top of the Dons after a three-pointer by Austin Vereen at 14:14, giving UOP a 7-4 advantage over USF.
  • Finding their rhythm as the half went on, freshman Pierre Crockrell II hit back-to-back floaters in the paint as the Tigers took advantage of the San Francisco scoring drought, leading the Dons 21-9 with 5:44 remaining in the first half.
  • Locking down on defense, Pacific would hold USF to the lowest point total by an opponent in a half this season, taking a 29-13 lead into the locker room at the halftime break.

Second Half-
  • Looking to keep their double-digit lead over the Dons, senior Jahlil Tripp tallied his first bucket of the second half to keep Pacific on top, 31-16, at the 17:10 mark.
  • Despite a quick run by USF, another layup by Tripp would keep the Tigers out in front by ten with 13:21 remaining, 35-25.
  • Although San Francisco would fight to cut the lead to four, Crockrell converted an and-one at 11:47 as the Tiger stayed in front of the Dons, 38-31.
  • Starting in his first game since Dec. 28 at UC Irvine, junior Justin Moore nailed a jump shot at 4:43 as Pacific maintained their lead over the Dons, leading 49-35.
  • Coming up clutch when called upon, Moore and freshman Daniss Jenkins would go a combined 7-of-8 from the free-throw line in the final 1:05 of regulation.
  • Closing out their eighteenth overall victory and sixth in conference play, the Tigers cruised past the Dons by a final score of 60-48.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Putting up on of his most dominant stat lines of the season, Tripp was named the City of Stockton Human Resources Hardworking Player of the Game after recording a new career-high with 20 rebounds. The 6'5" guard also added 8 points, 2 assists, one block and one steal.
  • Providing support for their teammates, Jenkins and Moore each added 9 points for the Tigers while James Hampshire notched 8 points and 12 rebounds in the victory over the Dons.
  • Seeming to be the x-factor all night, Crockrell also tied his season and career-high with 12 points on 5-of-10 shooting in just 15 minutes played.
  • Putting forth a team effort in the win, Pacific led San Francisco in second chance points (4-2), bench points (23-8), points in the paint (30-26) and fast break points (6-3).

UP NEXT:
Pacific will return home to the Alex G. Spanos Center for another crucial WCC contest when they host Pepperdine (13-11, 6-4) on Saturday, Feb. 8. The Tigers previously defeated the Waves, 59-56, on Jan. 2 in Malibu as they look to sweep the season series from their conference rival for the third consecutive year.
