UOP Ready for Battle vs. BYU

STOCKTON, Calif. – The Pacific men's basketball team (15-6, 3-2) looks to get back to their winning ways as they host BYU (14-6, 3-2) on Thursday night at the Alex G. Spanos Center.
 
After splitting games at Portland and Santa Clara last week, the Tigers are hungry for their first home victory since the Jan. 4 overtime thriller versus Saint Mary's.

LAST TIME OUT:
  • Despite a late run by the Tigers, UOP could not complete the comeback on Saturday, Jan. 18 as they were defeated by Santa Clara, 84-80.
  • Senior Jahlil Trippmade history against the Broncos, becoming the 29th Tiger in program history to reach the 1,000-point mark with a jump shot in the paint at 5:14 in the second half. Overall, he poured in a team-high 28 points, his second-highest point total on the season, while also adding six rebounds and three assists.
  • Junior Jeremiah Bailey also enjoyed a career-night as the forward finished with a season-high 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting. He also added six rebounds and two assists for UOP.
  • Graduate transfer Gary Chivichyan knocked down three from behind-the-arc for a total of nine points for the Tigers.
  • Pacific lead the Broncos in points off turnovers (13-10), second chance points (16-4), bench points (35-21) and points in the paint (38-36).
 
THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Pacific leads the WCC in blocks (87), field goal defense (.397) and scoring defense (63.8). The Tigers are also second in the conference and seventh in Division-I with a +9.3 rebounding margin.
  • Jahlil Tripp has scored double-figures in 16 games this season, averaging a team-leading 15.4 points per game, which ranks eighth in the WCC. Justin Moore has scored double-figures in 11 of his 17 games played this season, averaging 10.1 points per game.
  • Pacific continues to be a threat from behind-the-arc this season as junior Justin Moore leads the conference in three-point percentage (48.6%) while graduate transfer Gary Chivichyan is fourth in the WCC in three-point field goals made per game with an average of 2.1.
  • Jahlil Tripp opened the season at 6th in career record books for steals (99), but now on ranks third with 130 behind just Adam Jacobsen (160) and Corey Anders (191). Tripp surpassed Joe Ford for third on January 16 against Port­land, where the Tigers also reached 15 wins for the first time under head coach Damon Stoudamire.
 
SCOUTING THE COUGARS:
  • BYU has won three-straight against Pacific, five of six overall and four of five in Stockton since the Tigers rejoined the WCC. Last season, BYU won 90-87 at UOP as TJ Haws scored 24 points in addition to adding six assists while Yoeli Childs posted a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
  • The Cougars are among the most efficient offensive teams in the country, raking among the nation's best in field goal percentage (8th), 3-point field goal percentage (4th), assists per game (9th), assist/turnover ratio (7th) and 3-point field goals per game (13th). According to Kenpom.com, BYU is the 16th best in the country in adjusted offensive efficiency.
  • Mark Pope is in his first year as head coach of the Cougars after coming to Provo from Utah Valley. After winning the 1996 NCAA Men's Basketball National Championship with Kentucky and playing eight seasons in the NBA, Pope was also an assistant at Georgia (2009-2010), Wake Forest (2010-2011) and BYU (2011-2015).
