Pacific Wins Home Opener Against Stanislaus State

STOCKTON, Calif. – The Pacific men's basketball team earned its first victory of the 2019-20 season Tuesday night, when it topped Stanislaus State, 69-47, at the Alex G. Spanos Center. 
 

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT


First Half

  • The Tigers scored its first three points on consecutive made free throws by Austin Vereen which eventually led to an 11-1 lead through the first three minutes of play.
  • With a 13 point (14-1) deficit, Stanislaus State went on an 11-2 run between 15:13 and 8:20 to come back within four points (16-12) of the Tigers.
  • Just under the seven minute mark Pacific regained a double-digit lead and extended it to the largest of the half (18 points) with 3:07 remaining on the clock. 
  • The Warriors went on a final run that put them back within 10 points (35-25) at the end of the first half.
  • As a team, Pacific scored nine points from beyond the arc, while shooting 48.1 percent from the field.
  • Amari McCray was five-for-six from the field to score 10 of his 14 points in the first half. 
     

Second Half

  • There were only five baskets made by either team through nearly the first 10 minutes of the second half with Pacific scoring on two-pointers by Jahlil Tripp (19:26), Daniss Jenkins (16:14), Austin Vereen (11:21) and Broc Finstuen (10:07). 
  • Pacific controlled the remainder of the game, holding the Warriors to just 20 points in the final 10 minutes, while extending its lead to a half-high 16 points at the 3:48 mark.
  • After a slow start, Broc Finstuen was unstoppable during the final 20 minutes of action, totaling nine points and seven rebounds. The transfer out of Casper College was three-for-four from both the field and the free throw line.
  • Jahlil Tripp's defense also shined in the half as he pulled down six (3 offensive, 3 defensive) of his eight rebounds.
  • The Tigers shot event better from the field, shooting 50 percent (12-of-24).

     

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES

  • In his first game in over a year, McCray was the Tigers scoring and rebounding leader with 14 points and eight rebounds. In addition, he totaled two blocks and two steals en route to earning the City of Stockton Human Resources Hardworking Player of the Game
  • Justin Moore, a junior out of Georgia Tech commanded the Tigers' offensive efforts, dishing out a team-high three assists, while finished with a second-best 12 points. 
  • Pacific held the edge in field goals made (25-13), rebounds (39-21), assists (10-4), and steals (7-4).

     

WHAT'S NEXT
The Tigers will take an extended road trip to Honolulu, Hawai'i to participate in the University of Hawai'i at Manoa-hosted Rainbow Classic. There, Pacific will face South Dakota, Florida A&M and Hawaii. Video, audio, and live stats links can be found at pacifictigers.com.
