Tigers Fall in Triple-Overtime to Boise State

STOCKTON, Calif. – The Pacific men's basketball team dropped a narrow 82-76 decision, following three overtime periods, to Boise State on Saturday evening at the Alex G. Spanos Center.

Pacific is now 5-3 on the season, including a 4-1 record at home. Boise State improves to 3-2.

 

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT

First Half

  • After falling to a quick 3-0 deficit, Pacific gained its first lead (4-3) of the game at 17:50 on made layup by Jahlil Tripp
  • Boise State went on a 10-2 run over the next three minutes to take is largest lead of the game (13-6).
  • Despite coming back within two points (13-11) on made layups by Jeremiah Bailey and James Hampshire, Boise State scored five-consecutive points to pull back up by seven points with just 11:37 left on the clock.
  • Gary Chivichyan answered right back with a made jumper and a made layup by Broc Finstuen at 8:31, the Tigers found themselves back within three points (18-15).
  • Neither team scored for nearly two and a half minutes. A made jumper by Bailey at 5:29 knotted the game for the first time at 18-18.
  • Pacific was outscored, 5-2 to close out the first half at a 23-20 disadvantage. 
     

Second Half

  • Pacific was unable to come within three points of Boise State through the first eight minutes of the second half. Following the under-12 minute media timeout, Pacific went on a 9-0 run to take its first lead of the game (40-35).
  • There were four lead changes in the final nine minutes of regulation. With just under two minutes to play, the Tigers had a 4-2 run that led to a 56-56 tie at the buzzer. 
  • Attempting at the victory in the final seconds, Tripp attempted at a three pointer. Following the miss, Bailey came up big with an offensive rebound that he laid off the glass for a basket at the buzzer. After being reviewed by the officials, the clock had expired prior to the made basket and the two teams headed into overtime.
     

1st Overtime

  • The score was tied three times in the first overtime period. The remainder of the time, Pacific held the lead. 
  • A made free throw by Bailey gave the Tigers a three-point (62-59) lead with just 00:24 left on the clock. 
  • Following a Pacific foul, Boise State's Marcus Dickinson made two free throws to bring the Broncos back within one point (62-61) with only 10 seconds left on the clock. 
  • Moore was fouled on a drive to the basket that place him back on the free throw line, where he made one-of-two (63-61).
  • The Broncos' Justinian Jessup sank a jumper just outside of the paint with 00:03 left on the clock to force a second overtime.
     

2nd Overtime

  • It was a bit less eventful in the second five-minute overtime with a total of two lead changes and a tie score at 65-65, 70-70, and 72-72.
  • Each team only scored nine points.
  • With just over a minute left to play, Finstuen put the Tigers up, 72-70 on a made layup. Boise State attempted to even the score once more, but missed a layup, which then gave the Tigers the ball with 00:44 remaining. 
  • Moore attempted to put the Tigers up by two possessions, but missed his attempted jumper.
  • Boise State's Jessup tried to repeat as the hero, but after missing his jumper, Broncos' Alex Hobbs sagged the offensive rebound and scored on the put-back to secure the opportunity at a third overtime.
     

3rd Overtime

  • Neither team scored in the first two minutes.
  • Pacific fell victim to a 10-2 Boise State run the resulted in an 82-76 win for the Broncos.

     

THE LAST TIME

  • The loss to the Broncos marked the Tigers first overtime game since their 84-75 win over UC Irvine last season on Dec. 29.
  • The last time the Tigers played in a triple-overtime game was during the 1988-89 season, when they defeated Fresno State, 75-71 on Feb. 4. 

     

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES

  • Four Tigers — Tripp, Finstuen, Moore, Chivichyan — contributed double-figure scoring performances, led by senior Tripp, who shot 7-for-17 from the field and 8-for-9 from the free throw line for a season-high 22 points. In addition, Tripp totaled four rebounds, two assists, and two steals en route to being named the City of Stockton Human Resources Hardworking Player of the Game.
  • Finstuen set a new career mark of 14 points on 5-for-7 shooting from the field and a 4-for-8 mark from the charity stripe.
  • Moore also collected 14 points, while Chivichyan matched his season-high of 11 points. 
  • Hampshire also recorded season-bests with a team-leading 11 rebounds and three blocks. 
  • Bailey also pulled down double-digit rebounds, totaling 10 to go along with his eight points.

     

AS A TEAM

  • The Tigers out-shot the Broncos, 42.4% - 39.7%
  • Pacific has topped all eight of its opponents this season in points off of the bench, scoring 39 off the bench against Boise State.
  • The Orange and Black committed 22 turnovers. Boise State went on to score 23 points off of turnovers.
  • On the boards, Pacific matched its season-high of 48 rebounds, which included a season-best 34 on defense. 

     

WHAT'S NEXT
Pacific will remain home for its next three contests, beginning with a game against SIU-Edwardsville on Tuesday (Nov. 26). The Tigers will then wrap up the holiday week with a Friday (Nov. 29) game against Longwood.
