Pacific Outlasts Coppin State, 64-60

STOCKTON, Calif. – The Pacific men's basketball team, despite nearly having its 17-point lead erased, held on for a 64-60 win over Coppin State on Tuesday night at the Alex G. Spanos Center.

The Tigers improve to 5-2 on the season, including a 4-0 record on their home court. The Eagles fall to 1-5.

 

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT

First Half

  • The Tigers topped the Eagles in shooting from the floor, 36.7% - 22.7%.
  • Justin Moore led all players with seven points, going 3-for-5 from the floor, including a made three-pointer just one minute in to regulation.
  • Pacific opened the contest with a 13-6 run which included a six-point effort from the Tigers center, Amari McCray.
  • The Orange and Black extended its lead to its largest of the night (17 pts.) after holding Coppin State scoreless for nearly 11 minutes (14:09-3:19).
  • In the final three and a half minutes, the Eagles went on a 9-2 run that brought them back within 10 points (25-15) of the Tigers.
  • There were a combined 23 turnovers in the half, with Pacific committing 12.
     

Second Half

  • The two squads matched point-for-point through the first four minutes.
  • Pacific held its double-figure lead until a made three-pointer by the Eagles diminished the Tigers lead to seven points (38-31).
  • Coppin State continued to chip away at the Tigers lead, battling back within one point (42-41) at the 8:21 mark. 
  • With 4:40 remaining in regulation, Gary Chivichyan knocked down his first three-pointer of the game to put the Tigers back up by eight points.
  • The Tigers would not have a lead larger than six the remainder of the game.
  • There was some stress for the home team through the final minute of play. Following a made three-pointer at the 00:37 mark that put the Eagles within three points, Coppin State attempted at tying the game after a Pacific turnover. CSU would take two scoring attempts in the key before being fouled and sent to the line with just 00:14 on the clock.
  • A fastbreak dunk by Moore secured the four-point victory.
  • Pacific shot just 39.3 percent (11-28) from the field with a 1-for-8 effort in the second half.

     

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES

  • Jahlil Tripp snagged his second-straight City of Stockton Human Resources Hardworking Player of the Game honor after a season-best performance that included 21 points and 13 rebounds. 
  • Moore tied his season-high of 16 points after a perfect 5-for-7 effort from the field and 5-for-6 effort from the charity stripe. 
  • McCray was the only other Tiger to score in double-figures (10 points).
  • Pacific committed a season-high 19 turnovers.
