Tigers Edged By Hawai'i

HONOLULU, Hawai'i – The Pacific men's basketball team lost a a hard fought battle Monday night in its 55th Annual Outrigger Resort Rainbow Classic finale, dropping a 72-67 decision against tournament-host Hawai'i 

The Tigers fall to 2-2, while the Rainbow Warriors improve to 2-1 on the season.

 

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT

First Half

  • Both teams struggled to find the inside of the rim to start the game with Pacific leading 5-0 through the first three minutes of play. 
  • It wasn't until 16:43 that Hawai'i would score its first points, sinking two free throws to come back within three of the Tigers.
  • At the 12:39 mark, Hawai'i went on a 10-2 run that led to the Rainbow Warriors' largest lead of the half (8 pts.)
  • Over the next three minutes Pacific battled back within one point (17-16). With a four-point deficit at 9:49, Broc Finstuen drove in to the key, making a layup and drawing a foul, which he converted for a three point play.
  • Hawai'i went on to extend its lead, but between 7:05-3:46 Pacific went 4-for-5 from the field to take its third lead of the half.
  • The two squads remained within three points of each other for the remainder of the half and with two made free throws, Hawai'i led at halftime, 35-33.
  • Pacific out-shot Hawai'i from the field (43.8%-40.7%), but allowed the Rainbow Warriors a 40.0 shot percentage from the three point line.
     

Second Half

  • The score was tied four times, but there were only two lead changes in the final 20 minutes of play. 
  • Pacific reached its largest lead (8 pts.) of the match three times under the 10 minute mark. 
  • From 9:06-4:18 the two squads matched point-for-point.
  • With an eight-point lead and just 4:18 left in the game, Hawai'i made three-consecutive attempts from beyond the arc and a free throw to take a late one-point (63-62) lead.
  • With the game slipping away, the Tigers would have one final shot at evening the score late and with a made three-pointer by Jeremiah Bailey, Pacific was back within one point (68-67). 
  • Unfortunately, the remainder of the game did not favor Pacific and with 4-0 run in the final 20 seconds of play secured the victory for the Rainbow Warriors.

     

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES

  • Justin Moore was named the City of Stockton Human Resources Hardworking Player of the Game after totaling 14 points, five assists, and three rebounds. 
  • Amari McCray put forth a season-high effort, totaling 14 points on 8-for-13 shooting from the field. McCray also totaled four rebounds in his 27 minutes of action.
  • Bailey sank three balls from long range and sank a short jumper in the key for a season-high 11 points. Bailey also pulled down four rebounds. On the night.
  • Despite just 12 minutes of playing time, Jahlil Tripp led all players with five rebounds.

     

ALL TOURNAMENT
Moore earned his way on to the six-person Rainbow Classic All-Tournament team. Moore averaged 13.3 points, four assists, three rebounds, and two steals per game. He finished 18-33 (.545) from the field, 5-9 (.556) from beyond the arc, and 12-16 (.750) from the free throw line.
