Box Score PROVO, Utah – The University of the Pacific baseball team dominated the Brigham Young University Cougars on Friday night to even the series with a 9-3 victory.
The Tigers improve to 21-29 overall and 10-16 in conference action, while the Cougars fall to 22-27 on the season and 11-15 in the conference.
In the top of the second inning, the Tigers momentum started to fly, as they took a quick 3-0 lead. Ryan Schalch was walked to lead off followed by Tyler Ryan reaching on a fielder's choice and advancing to second on an error, which moved Schalch to third. Carter Hayes stepped up and hit a sacrifice fly to score Schalch and place Ryan in scoring position.
Keaton Glover hit a single through the left side to score Ryan to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead. Kevin Sandri sacrificed a bunt to score Glover to increase the Pacific lead, 3-0.
At the top of the fourth, the Tigers continued the hitting streak, as Matthew Tarantino hammered a leadoff double to left field followed by a single to shortstop by Sandri. Due to a fielder's choice, Free reached first and Tarantino scored to increase the lead, 4-0.
In the fifth inning, Pacific was not letting up. Carter Hayes walked and Keaton Glover singled up the middle to push Hayes to second. Back to the top of the lineup, Tarantino crushed a three-run homer over the left field fence to score Glover and Hayes and took a commanding, 7-0 lead over the Cougars.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, BYU ended the shut out with a leadoff triple to center field by Keaton Kringlen. David Clawson hit a single to right field to score Kringlen and trail, 7-1.
However, Glover answered back in the top of the seventh with a leadoff solo home run over the left field fence to keep the lead at 8-1.
From there, the Tigers scored one run and the Cougars scored two runs in the eighth, but the Orange and Black came out with the victory, 9-3, to even the series.
Pacific tallied 16 hits with nine RBI and nine runs scored.
Glover and Tarantino lead the offense with three RBI and three hits. Glover scored three runs, while Tarantino had two. Ryan had three hits with two runs. Sandri and Lucas Halstead contributed to the offense with two hits each. James Free II, Ryan Schalch, and Hayes round out the hitters with one hit each. Free, Hayes, and Sandri combined for the other three RBI. Hayes and Schalch scored the other two runs.
On the mound, Ricky Reynoso picked up the win (5-3) after pitching six innings with four strikeouts. Lucas Sweany earned his third save of the season after pitching three innings with one strikeout. Hayden Rogers was charged with the loss after pitching 2.2 innings with two strikeouts.
The Tigers close out the series and the season on Saturday, May 19 in game three against BYU. First pitch is set for noon PST.
