Tigers Fall in Game One to USD, 7-4

STOCKTON, Calif. – The University of the Pacific baseball team fell to the University of San Diego on Friday night, 7-4.

The Orange and Black fall to 7-14 on the season and 0-4 in conference action, while the Toreros improve to 11-11 overall and 2-2 in conference play.

The Tigers jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. With one out, Alex LeForestier grabbed the first hit of the game with a single to left field. On a 1-2 count, James Free ended up walking due to being hit by the pitch, advancing LeForestier to second. Bradley Jekich stepped up to the plate a blasted double down the left field line to score LeForestier and advance Free to third for the 1-0 lead.

From there, Free scored the second run on a fielder's choice by Tyler Ryan, who reached first and advanced to second on an error by the Toreros.

In the top of the seventh, USD take a one-run lead, 3-2, but the Tigers answered back to tie at the bottom of the inning. With two outs, Keaton Glover stepped up to the plate and knocked a single to left field. Kevin Sandri followed right behind but was hit by the pitch on the first throw, pushing Glover to second. LeForestier smashed a single to left field to score Glover for the tying run.

However, it was not enough as the Toreros closed out the game scoring three runs in the eighth and one in the ninth to claim the victory over the Tigers, 7-4.

The Orange and Black tallied four RBIs in eight hits with four runs. LeForestier, Jekich, Ryan, and Matthew Tarantino all had one RBI each. LeForestier and Jekich each had two hits in four at-bats with one run. Glover, Tarantino, Free and Sandri combined for four hits.

On the mound, Cooper Casad was charged with the loss after pitching 1.2 innings. Paul Richan picked up the win after going 7.0 innings with nine strikeouts. Anthony Donatella picked up his second save of the season with 2.0 innings and four strikeouts.

The Tigers return to action tomorrow against USD for game two of the series. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
