Box Score STOCKTON, Calif. - The Pacific baseball team's three-game win streak in midweek games was snapped Tuesday as Sacramento State posted a 5-2 win at Klein Family Field. James Free II turned in three hits and scored one of the Tigers two runs.
Justin Giovannoni tossed five innings and allowed just six hits, but the Hornets made the most of them, plating two runs of the Tigers starter, who falls to 0-2. Giovannoni struck out three while walking none and made it through his five innings on just 52 pitches.
Sacramento State's Austin Roberts (2-0) allowed four hits in five innings, allowing one unearned run to pick up the win.
In the first, Sacramento State plated a run with two outs on a triple from Vinny Esposito and a single to the hole at short by Kody Reynolds. Gionvannoni threw just nine pitches, all for strikes in the frame.
Reynolds led off the third with a solo homer to left for a 2-0 Sacramento State lead.
The Tigers picked up a run in the fourth, as Schalch doubled down the left field line, took third on a passed ball and scored on an RBI groundout from Halstead.
Giovannoni departed after five innings, allowing two earned on six hits while striking out three and walking none.
Sacramento State tacked on three in the seventh as Andrew McWilliam singled and scored on a ground ball from Ian Dawkins, who was safe via a throwing error. Dawkins stole third and scored when the throw down deflected into left field. After a walk, Esposito doubled in a
run for a 5-1 Hornets lead before Miles Haddad got out of the inning.
Bailey Hansen tossed a scoreless eighth and ninth for the Tigers.
In the ninth, Free singled and came in to score on a single from Danny Mayer, who finished the night 1-for-3 with a walk. But Justin Dillon posted a strikeout to end the ballgame.
Dillon allowed a run on two hits in the ninth. Austin Root (seventh) and Chad Perry (eighth) each pitched a hitless inning, while Ty Fox allowed two hits in the sixth.
Sacramento State improves to 21-20 on the season, while the Tigers fall to 13-25.
Pacific will open a three-game home series against Portland on Friday. Game one is set for 6 p.m. on Friday, with game two also scheduled for 6 p.m., on Saturday. The Tigers will hold Senior Night festivities on Saturday, with post game Fireworks after the ballgame presented by Dr. Amy Scriven, DDS. Limited tickets for Saturday remain. On Sunday, first pitch has been moved to a 12:00 p.m. noon start.
