Baseball Falls In Series Finale At LMU

Box Score

LOS ANGELES, - Ryan Schalch went 2-for-5 with a home run and James Free II added a three-run home run, but Loyola Marymount completed the sweep with a 15-6 win over the Pacific baseball team Sunday afternoon.

Kyle Soberano added two hits in four trips for the Tigers.

Danny Mayer's first-inning single snapped streak by LMU's Cory Abbott of 28 consecutive batters retired, but Abbott improved to 5-1 on the year as he followed up last Saturday's perfect game by holding Pacific to no earned runs through six innings with eight strikeouts.

The Tigers posted a five-run seventh inning, but a five-run frame for LMU in the third, and a six-run sixth were enough for the Lions.

Billy Wilson tripled and came in on a Phil Caulfield single as LMU took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third. A second run came in on a throwing error from Reynoso, and following an RBI groundout,  Steven Chavez drove another run with a double to left center. Miles Haddad replaced Ricky Reynoso and was greeted by an RBI single from Jimmy Hill.

In the fourth, LMU tacked on two more as Wilson singled on a bunt and Caulfield doubled down the left field line. B Shearer added an RBI single for a 7-0 Lions lead.

The Tigers picked up a run in the fifth to break the shutout, as Soberano reached on an error, advanced on a walk and a fielder's choice and trotted him on a balk.

LMU blew the game open in the sixth, scoring six runs. After a walk, an error and a hit by pitch plated the first run, Smart singled and Hill added a two-run double for a 10-1 lead. Wilson walked and Nick Sogard posted a three-run double down the left field line before Ed O'Bannon III came out of the bullpen to retire the third out of the inning.

Soberano singled in the seventh and came in to score on a double from Kevin Sandri, and Free clubbed a three-run homer to right field. Schalch followed with a solo home run to left center before Braydon Salzman entered and retired the last two outs of the inning for LMU as the Lions led 13-6.

Kevin Jordan added a two-run home run for the Lions in the eighth to settle on the final margin.

Reynoso took the loss to fall to 3-3 on the year. Pacific falls to 11-15 overall, 2-7 in West Coast Conference play while LMU improves to 18-10 overall, 7-2 in WCC action.

The Tigers return home Sunday night and will face Washington State on Monday at Klein Family Field. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
