Powerful Bats Not Enough For Pacific

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

STOCKTON, Calif. – The Pacific Tigers made a comeback on the strength of their power bats but would end up losing 7-6 to the Pepperdine Waves in game one Saturday.  The Tigers hit four homers but couldn't get the win and fall to 9-11 this year.  Pepperdine is 11-9.

Danny Mayer had his second multi-homer game of the season while Matt Tarantino and Ryan Schalch also left the yard.

Ryan Shreve struck out a career-high six batters in his six innings of work, making it back-to-back six-inning outings for the freshman.  He struck out at least one batter in each of the first four innings, including a three-strikeout first.

Vince Arobio took the loss, his first since April 24 of 2016 and just the fourth in his career.

Despite the strikeouts by Shreve, the Waves scored in the first inning.  Pepperdine reached on a wild-pitch third strike and, after a single, scored on a throwing error.

Pepperdine strung together a series of bloop hits in the second inning to score two more runs as the ball continually landed just out of reach of the Tiger defenders.

The Tigers homered four times in three innings, helped along by back-to-back blasts by Mayer and Tarantino in the fourth.  Mayer's second homer of the game, this time in the fifth, tied the game at four runs.

It was Schalch who would give Pacific their first lead with a two-run slam in the sixth, driving in Lucas Halstead with a shot deposited in the leftfield bullpen.  It was Schalch's first homer of his Pacific career and made it 6-4.

Pepperdine would tie the game with a run in the seventh and another in the eighth.  A passed ball allowed the runner to score from third in the eighth, making it 6-6.  The Waves then took back the lead with a hard single into centerfield.  Pepperdine would hold that lead and get the win.
