Box Score STOCKTON, Calif. - The Pacific women's basketball team fell for the first time in West Coast Conference action as BYU rode a big second half to a 68-55 win at the Alex G. Spanos Center Saturday.
GeAnna Luaulu-Summers led the Tigers with 10 points while Emily Simons grabbed 10 rebounds, tying a season high. Najah Queenland added eight points and five rebounds, while Callie Owens also chipped in eight points.
Desire Finnie saw her streak of double-figure scoring games come to an end at eight, as she finished with five points.
Pacific led for most of the first 12 minutes, but the Tigers suffered a prolonged drought midway spanning halftime, as BYU outscored the Tigers 29-7 over 11:53 to seize control.
The Tigers shot just 31.5 for the game (17-of-54), the team's second lowest percentage this season, while BYU connected at a 50 percent clip (26-of-52). Cassie Broadhead scored 20 points and Kalani Purcell added 16 with 13 rebounds to lead the Cougars.
Unique Coleman opened the game with a three-pointer, and Luaulu-Summers added a lay-up for a 5-0 lead, but BYU responded with a three from Kalani Purcell. Luaulu-Summers added a three as Pacific led 8-7 five minutes in. After a pair of free throws by BYU, Tylah King drilled a three from the corner to put the Tigers back in front, 11-9. BYU tied the game on a jumper from Purcell, but the Tigers responded by getting to the free throw line and a jumper from Finnie gave the Tigers a 17-13 lead after the first quarter.
Broadhead pulled the Cougars within 19-17 before Finnie connected on a trey, but BYU tallied a lay-up and three-pointer from Brenna Chase to tie the game at 22-22. Makenzi Pulsipher added a three as part of a 16-0 Cougar run. Queenland stopped the bleeding with a three-pointer, and Luaulu-Summers added an and-one, but BYU took a 39-28 lead into halftime as Pacific hit just three of 11 field goals in the quarter. BYU connected on 10-of-14 from the field in the period to out-score the Tigers 26-11.
BYU opened the third with buckets from Broadhead and Purcell, stretching the lead to 17. The Cougars led by 20 after resuming the dribble, and hitting a three after the whistle for a Pacific off-ball foul. Queenland answered with a three-pointer and Emily Simons hit a jumper in the paint to cut the gap to 51-36. But Broadhead hit a three from the corner as the Cougars led 54-36 after three quarters.
Owens connected on a jumper and Ameela Li hit a three-pointer to bring the Tigers within 18 in the fourth, but the Tigers would get no closer than 16 on a three from Owens with 2:05 to go.
Pacific falls to 3-1 in the West Coast Conference, and 7-8 overall, while BYU improves to 9-6 overall and 3-1 in the WCC.
The Tigers are back in action on Thursday, as the Tigers face Pepperdine in Malibu before returning to the Spanos Center for a Saturday match-up with San Francisco.
