Box Score Stockton, Calif. - The Pacific volleyball team swept Gonzaga Saturday to move to 2-0 in West Coast Conference play, 26-24, 25-19, 25-21. Lexi Elman hit .556 for the match with 16 kills, while Emily Baptista led the Tigers with 17 kills as she hit .343.
Elman added 14 digs and three blocks, for her 10th double-double of the season and 39th of her career.
Ashlyn Fleming chipped in nine kills while hitting .417, and Andie Shelton ran the offense with 37 assists to go with seven digs. Libero Katrin Gotterba chipped in 15 digs with nine assists.
Pacific hit .288 for the match, to improve to 8-6 overall and 2-0 in WCC action.
In set one, Pacific jumped out to a 7-4 lead with three kills from Elman and aces from Shelton and Baptista. Gonzaga rallied back to tie at 9-9 before Elman and Fleming added kills. Shelton's dump off provided a 15-12 lead and the Tigers led by as many as four on a kill from Janie Feldsher. Emmy Allen brought the Bulldogs within 21-20, but Shelton answered with a kill. A Baptista blast gave Pacific set point, but an error and a kill by Allen knotted the set at 24-24. Baptista delivered another kill before Fleming and Skylar Wine teamed for a set-winning block, 26-24.
Elman tied set two at 4-4 with an early kill down the line. Baptista and Wine provided a 10-7 lead to start an 11-4 Pacific run. Back-to-back kills from Elman prompted a Gonzaga timeout with the Tigers leading 19-11. Baptista's 12th kill put the Tigers up 22-13 before McKayla Ferris rattled off three kills for the Bulldogs. But after and ace from Elman, Fleming delivered the set point as the Tigers won 25-19 and carried a 2-0 lead into the break.
In set three, Pacific built a 13-7 lead as the Tigers posted three blocks, and Elman added a pair of aces. The Tigers stretched the lead to 18-9 on a kill from Feldsher, but the Bulldogs reeled off seven straight points to pull within 18-17. Elman stopped the run with her 15th kill and Baptista went cross court for a 20-17 lead. After two Gonzaga points, Baptista struck again for a 21-19 advantage. She tallied two more to the close, before Fleming set up match point and Elman delivered the finale in the 25-21 win.
Baptista was one shy of her career-best in kills, set Thursday, giving her 35 for the weekend and 50 in her last three matches. Elman's .556 hitting percentage was just shy of her career-best mark of .565, set last season.
Pacific will visit Santa Clara on Tuesday before returning to the Alex G. Spanos Center for matches Thursday against Pepperdine and Saturday against Loyola Marymount.
