Volleyball's Upset Bid Of #8 UCLA Falls Short, 3-1

Box Score

Honolulu, Hawai'i - The Pacific women's volleyball team was topped in four sets as the Tigers' upset bid of No. 8 UCLA fell short, 3-1, at the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic Thursday night, 22-25, 25-21, 25-18, 25-19.

Katrin Gotterba racked up 31 digs at libero, which tied for the seventh most in a match in Pacific history. It was the 13th 30+ dig match by a Tiger ever, and two off her career high of 33 set in 2014 against USC. Lexi Elman led Pacific with 15 kills while freshman Ashlyn Fleming had a breakout match with 11 kills against just one error for a .455 hitting percentage. Fleming also contributed four assisted blocks for 13 points, while Elman added 11 digs and three assisted blocks for a team-high 16.5 points. Andie Shelton doled out 40 assists for the Tigers.

Emily Baptista and Alicja Wilk each added seven kills, with Baptista posting 12 digs and Wilk posting eight total blocks (two solo, six assisted).

The Tigers hit .289 in set one, and held the Bruins to a .200 hitting percentage, as Pacific jumped out to a 10-2 lead. But the Bruins clawed back, pulling within 14-12 before Fleming and Elman posted kills to provide the Tigers a cushion. UCLA trimmed the margin back to 23-21, but Shelton dumped off for a kill and then teamed with Wilk for a block on set point for a 25-22 win.

In set two, Pacific started out hot again, leading 8-2 before the Bruins reeled off a 10-4 run to draw even at 12-12. Shelton and Fleming posted a block for a 14-12 Pacific advantage but UCLA answered with five-straight points for a 17-14 lead. UCLA stretched the advantage to 22-17 before the Tigers closed to within two on a pair of kills from Elman. However, a kill from Claire Felxi and two from Jordan Anderson earned UCLA the set win, 25-21, evening the match at one.

There were eight ties early in set three, before UCLA took a 14-11 lead on an Anderson kill and a service ace by Reily Buechler. Skylar Wine drew the Tigers within 15-13, but the Bruins surged ahead led by Anderson and Jennie Frager and the Tigers would get no closer than 22-18 before the final three points from UCLA.

Wilk's solo block and assisted block with Baptista gave Pacific an 8-7 lead in set four, but Frager answered for the Bruins. Tied at 11, UCLA took the lead for good with a kill from Zana Muno and a block on the next attempt. Elman's kill brought Pacific within 16-15, but the Bruins tallied five straight points to seize control. Baptista and Fleming added a block to bring the Tigers within 23-18 but Muno's two kills wrapped the win for the eighth-ranked Bruins.

Anderson finished with 17 kills while Muno added 13. The Tigers held UCLA to .193 hitting for the match, but hit .151 themselves. UCLA held a slim 14-13 edge in blocks for the match.

The Bruins remain undefeated at 4-0, while the Tigers fall to 2-2.

The Tigers were gunning for the 225th win in program history over a ranked team, but fell to 224-166 (.574) all-time against the AVCA Top 25 (which dates back to the 1982 season).

Pacific will face No. 15 Hawai'i on Friday in the nightcap, following the conclusion of UCLA vs Missouri State. First sever for the Tigers and Wahine is set for 10 p.m. PT.
