Tigers Come Up Short in Extras 9-4

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Stockton, Calif. – The Pacific Tigers were able to come back and tie the game against the Saint Mary's Gaels but ended up falling 9-4 in ten innings in the first game of their Sunday doubleheader.  The loss was the fifth straight in conference for the Tigers, who are now 10-18 overall and 3-8 in the WCC.  Saint Mary's moves to 18-10 overall and 8-3 in conference.

Ricky Reynoso entered the game on a stupendous roll, with an ERA of 0.56 in his last two starts.  Reynoso went nine innings in a no-decision last time out and has struck out 14 men over his last two games while allowing just ten baserunners.  The freshman went 6.1 innings today with three more strikeouts but allowed four runs and left with his second straight no-decision.

Bryce Lombardi took the loss, his third of the year, after giving up four runs in the tenth after 2.2 innings of work.

Anthony Gonsolin made his second start as a pitcher and continued to hit in the heart of the order for Saint Mary's.  Gonsolin pitched 5.1 innings and was replaced by Cameron Neff with the bases loaded and one out in the sixth.  The senior gave up just two earned runs in the game but got a no decision as the Tigers put up four runs total on him.  Gonsolin also struck out seven batters.

Saint Mary's started their offense early.  The first batter of the game was hit by a pitch.  A bloop single into center put men on the corners with no outs, putting Reynoso in a tough place.  Pacific went around the horn for a double play after that, but the runner on third was able to score to give Saint Mary's an early lead.  Reynoso's first strikeout of the day ended the inning with minimal damage done.

The Tigers had two hard-hit balls to start the second but only got one hit out of it.  Gio Brusa, who has three homers in the last four games, demolished the ball but sent it to dead center, giving the outfielder exactly enough room to reach up at the fence and pull it down for a 405-foot flyout.  J.J. Wagner was the next to bat and hit it just as hard, bouncing it off the wall in left for a double.

Lucas Halstead struck out after that but a wild pitch put him on and moved Wagner to third with just one out.  J.P. Yakel grounded out on a high chopper that erased any chance at a double play, allowing the run to score and making it 1-1.  The RBI was Yakel's eighth in WCC play, moving him into a tie for seventh in the conference.

Reynoso allowed a single to start the third but erased the runner post haste with a pickoff move.  The freshman started his move as the runner took off for second, allowing Verlin to throw over to Sandri at second and easily get the caught stealing.

The next Gaels baserunner successfully stole second then came around to score on a bloop single that Brusa trapped as he slid forward.  Anthony Villa homered for Saint Mary's on the very next pitch to score two more and make it 4-1 Gaels.

Halstead reached for the second time today with a double that nearly cleared the wall in right-center.  The sophomore knocked the ball off the wall near the scoreboard to end up at second.  Unfortunately, a Tiger baserunner was caught stealing the pitch beforehand and a strikeout followed, leaving Pacific down by three.

Danny Mayer hit his eighth double of the year and his fourth at home to start the sixth off right for Pacific.  Mayer moved to third on a wild pitch before Brusa walked for the second time in the game.  Brusa has walked five times in the last five games.

It was Wagner that drove in Pacific's second run of the game with a single to center, allowing Mayer to walk home and moving Brusa into scoring position.  It was Wagner's second hit of the day, moving his WCC batting average to .341 with four doubles and five RBI.

The Tigers loaded the bases on a fielder's choice when the Gaels botched the throw on a transfer between the second baseman and the shortstop.  Louis Mejia pinch-hit in the bases-loaded, one-out situation and drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.

Boras tied the game with a bunt single, his second hit of the day.  The junior hustled down the line and forced a bad throw that made it past the first baseman and allowed Yakel to take third while Wagner scored to make it 4-4.  Boras has hit .455 in his last five appearances.

Lombardi entered the game in a tough situation in the seventh after Saint Mary's led off with a double and moved the man to third on a groundout.  Lombardi struck out the first man he faced looking, then forced a groundout to end the fourth straight scoreless frame put up by Tigers pitchers.

With the game tied, Mejia started the ninth as well as could be asked with an infield single.  Mejia sent a rocket at third base that was knocked down by the diving third baseman but it was hit too hard to get a throw off as it rolled away from the fielder's glove.  Boras successfully bunted Mejia over, though his first attempt saw him safe at first as the ball just barely rolled foul down the first base line.  Boras' second bunt attempt was perfect and put the winning run in scoring position.

With two outs, the Gaels intentionally walked Nate Verlin, bringing up Mayer with a chance to win the game.  Mayer got ahold of a pitch but it was caught on the run on the rightfield warning track to send the game to extras.

An error gave Saint Mary's the lead in the tenth.  The Gaels had two weak singles to start the inning that found holes in the defense to reach the outfield.  After that, a throwing error on an attempted sacrifice bunt scored a run and put men on second and third with no outs.

Justin Giovannoni entered after an intentional walk to load the bases and set up the force at home with no outs.  A sacrifice fly followed for another Saint Mary's run.

Giovannoni got a strikeout to make it two outs but an intentional walk, followed by an RBI walk, make it 7-4.  A single to center pushed to more runs across for a five-run tenth for the Gaels.  The Tigers couldn't get anything going in their half of the tenth and ended up losing 9-4.

The Tigers play a road non-conference game against Fresno State on Tuesday before heading to Oregon for a three-game series against WCC foe Portland.  The Friday game in that series will begin at 6:00 pm, with the games on Saturday and Sunday both scheduled for 1:00 pm.
