Stockton, Calif. - Despite a 12-0 fourth quarter run to nearly erase an 18-point deficit, the Pacific women's basketball team fell 67-57 to BYU at home Thursday night. Desire Finnie scored 14 points while Emily Simons posted 12 points and nine rebounds.
The Tigers connected on just 3-of-23 from deep and 1-of-16 in the second half. Pacific trailed by one at halftime only to se BYU storm out of halftime with a 23-10 third quarter. The Tigers battled back with a 12-0 fourth quarter run to cut an 18-point Cougar lead down to four, but a Lexi Rydalch scored back-to-back baskets with a steal to curb Pacific's momentum and hang on to the win.
GeAnna Luaulu-Summers added 10 points for the Tigers, while Najah Queenland grabbed a career-best 12 rebounds and handed out five assists.
BYU hit 5-of-10 from three-point range in the second half, and 8-of-17 for the game.
The Tigers fall to 10-12 overall, 3-8 in West Coast Conference play, while BYU sits atop the WCC standings at 11-1, 19-4 overall.
BYU opened with a pair of buckets for an early 4-0 lead. But the Tigers held BYU without a field goal, forcing five turnovers and Luaulu-Summers took to the rim and found Simons for a lay-in and a 6-5 Pacific lead. Erin Butler added a three for an 11-5 advantage. Rydalch snapped an 11-1 Pacific run with a three as the shot clock expired, and then added a lay-up. Mauriana Clayton finished inside of a pass from Simons for a 13-11 lead, but BYU closed the quarter with a pair of free throws from Rydalch as the quarter ended tied at 13-13.
In the second, Simons and Finnie posted lay-ups, but Kylie Maeda hit a jumper and a three-pointer for an 18-17 lead. Luaulu-Summers drove the lane, but Rydalch connected on a three-pointer for a 23-19 lead. Luaulu-Summers connected on a three from the wing and Simons hit a baseline jumper for a 24-23 Pacific lead. After a BYU bucket, Butler ran down a long outlet pass from Queenland for a fast break lay-up. But Rydalch answered and the Cougars led 27-26 at halftime.

In the third, Rydalch connected on a three-pointer after the Tigers came up empty amid contact in the paint. Eackles scored in transition, and then drove to the rack and finished, but a pair of buckets by BYU put the Cougars in front, 34-30. Mackenzi Pulsipher hit a three-pointer and drew a foul. Rydalch added a three to stretch the lead to 43-30. Finnie's outback quelled an 11-0 Cougar run. The Cougars led by 18 before Simons finished inside and Queenland hit a pair of free throws.
Queenland scored in the paint and Simons hit an outside jumper to bring Pacific within 54-40. Finnie added a baseline jumper and drove two a bucket as the Tigers clawed back within nine, 56-47. Luaulu-Summers added a three-pointer as the Tigers pulled within 56-52, but Rydalch hit a jumper and a transition lay-up. Pulsipher hit a three with the shot clock expiring to give BYU a 10-point cushion.
The Tigers added buckets from Finnie and Luaulu-Summers, but Rydalch hit to free throws and a fast break lay-up with four seconds left for a career-high 38 points and the final margin.
Pacific hit on 4-of-14 from the field in the third quarter, 0-for-6 from three-point range. The Tigers forced 20 BYU turnovers, leading to 17 points and out-rebounded the Cougars 37-32. Butler grabbed six boards to go with five points.
The Tigers are back in action Saturday against San Diego, in a 2:00 p.m. tip-off at the Alex G. Spanos Center. Saturday's game is Pacific Plays Pink, with the Tigers donning pink jerseys to show their support for the fight against breast cancer.
