Stockton, Calif. - The Pacific women's basketball team drubbed Portland, 87-38, Thursday night at the Alex G. Spanos Center as Najah Queenland and Mauriana Clayton each provided double-doubles.
Queenland posted her first career double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Mauriana Clayton scored 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for her third double-double of the year and second in two games. Hailie Eackles tallied 13 while Chelsea Lidy added 12 points. Emily Simons and GeAnna Luaulu-Summers each chipped in eight points, while Eli Lopez Sagrera added seven and Desire Finnie six.
The Tigers never trailed and shot 54 percent for the game (33-of-61). Pacific outscored Portland 48 to 16 in the paint, turned 17 turnovers into 21 points, and held a 48-25 advantage in rebounding.
Pacific's defense held Portland to 24 percent shooting (13-of-54), a season best opponents percentage. The 38 points allowed was the season best defensive effort by the Tigers. Portland scored just 23 points through three quarters, and Portland connected on their final two attempts from three-point range to finish 2-of-17 from behind the arc.
In the third, Pacific outscored Portland 29-5 to turn a 44-18 game into a full scale blowout. The 49-point win was Pacific's third largest against a Division I team, and sixth largest against any opponent. It was also the second largest by Pacific in a conference game (any conference) and largest in a WCC game.
Eackles opened the scoring with a three-pointer from the wing and the Tigers stormed out to an 13-4 lead, hitting six of their first seven from the field.
Clayton converted an and-one and Lidy scored inside as Pacific led 20-8. Simons added a baseline jumper as the Tigers closed the quarter with a 9-0 run and a 22-8 lead.
In the second, Pacific unloaded a 17-0 run, the Tigers largest shutout run of the season, and built a 42-12 lead, also Pacific's largest of the season. Portland answered back with three straight buckets, but the Tigers carried a 44-18 lead into halftime.
Clayton led the Tigers at the break with 13 points and 8 rebounds, while Eackles added 10 and Queenland scored eight points.
The Tigers connected on 58 percent in the first half, 19-of-33 from the field. Pacific tallied 11 fast-break points and held a 32-advantage in points in the paint through the first half. The Tigers also scored 14 points off nine Portland turnovers and out-rebounded the Pilots 24-9.
Queenland connected on a three-pointer to open the third quarter kicking off a 21-1 Pacific run. Luaulu-Summers and Erin Butler added three-pointers as the Tigers stretched the lead to 44 with 4:47 to go in the third.
Lopez Sagrera converted an and-one with three seconds left in the third, giving Pacific a 50-point lead, at 73-23. Pacific held Portland to 1-of-16 shooting in the third quarter.
In the fourth, the Tigers led by as many as 53, at 76-23 with 8:40 to go, but the Pilots scored 15 points the rest of the way to settle on the final margin.
Pacific improves to 12-14 on the season, 5-10 in West Coast Conference play.
The Tigers will be back in action on Saturday against Gonzaga at 2:00 p.m.
