Young's Shutdown Frames Boost Softball To Second Straight Shutout Victory

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Baton Rouge, La. - For the second straight contest, the Pacific Softball team received a shutout performance from its pitching staff, as sophomore Marissa Young and freshman Kenya Lindstrom combined to blank North Florida, 5-0, in the Tigers' third contest at the Tiger Classic.

Young finished six scoreless frames, allowing just three hits while striking out three. The sophomore did not walk a batter over an 80-pitch performance and only one ball left the infield, a double by Navia Penrod in the fifth inning. Lindstrom made her collegiate debut with a perfect seventh, striking out Taylor Watson to seal the win for the Orange and Black.

Pacific got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the second inning. With one out, senior Nicole Zapotoczny reached on an infield single ahead of a sacrifice bunt from sophomore Rachel Sellers. On a 1-2 count, sophomore Sydney Lahners launched Pacific's first homer of the season, clearing the left center field fence at Tiger Park and giving the Orange and Black an early 2-0 advantage with the blast.

After Pacific stranded a Sara Anderson triple in the bottom of the third, North Florida threatened in the top of the fourth inning without a ball reaching the outfield. With one out, Stacy McClelland reached on a fielding error and Shelby Duncan was hit by a pitch. The next hitter, Minnie Cocuzza was also hit by an errant Young toss, loading the bases for Katie Mandigo. Mandigo reached on a fielder's choice, as pinch runner Casey Estes was forced out at home for the second out of the frame. Young powered through Ashley Niesman for a swinging strikeout to get out of the jam.

The Tigers stranded a pair in the fourth inning but widened the advantage in their go-around in the fifth, taking advantage of a trio of Osprey errors. junior Haylee Moran-Rowen reached on a fielding error by the first baseman McClelland. Anderson reached on a fielder's choice and Moran-Rowen slid safely into second after a fielding error by shortstop Cocuzza.

With one out, Bourne reached on an infield single and advanced all the way to third base on the third error of the inning by Niesman, scoring both Anderson and Moran-Rowen for a 4-0 cushion. Zapotoczny then laid down a perfectly executed squeeze bunt, plating Bourne from third and giving Pacific the 5-0 lead that would hold as the final score.

Pacific picked up back-to-back shutout wins for the first time since last season at Santa Clara as Young and Megan Walters blanked the Broncos on April 25th and Dani Bonnet went the distance on April 26th to secure a sweep on the road.

The Tigers return to action at 5:30 pm Pacific time with a contest against tournament host and No. 3 ranked LSU. The game will be broadcast by SEC Network + and is available via WatchESPN for eligible cable subscribers. Fans are encouraged to visit PacificTigers.com for streaming links and live stats.
