Box Score SPOKANE, Wash. - Pacific dropped a four-set match to Gonzaga in West Coast Conference (WCC) action Thursday evening by scores of 17-25, 27-25, 18-25 and 23-25 inside the Martin Centre.
Gonzaga (15-11, 8-8 WCC) opened set one on an 8-3 spurt before Pacific (14-14, 8-8 WCC) answered with three-straight points on kills by Emily Baptista, Lexi Elman and Janie Feldsher. The Tigers put together two more runs of three-straight points and were helped by three-straight attack errors by the Bulldogs' McKayla Ferris. However, Ferris and Katelyn Oppio combined for a block on the final point of the game to give their team an eight-point win.
Game two opened with three ties in the first eight-total points, as a Baptista kill knotted the affair at four, but Gonzaga would register back-to-back points on six occassions midway through the match to take a 14-10 edge. Down 17-13, the Tigers scored seven of the next 10 points, including two Elman kills, to tie the affair at 20 after an attack error by Emmy Allen. The teams traded the next 10 points, with three of the five Tiger points coming off Elman kills, before an Ashlyn Fleming kill and Allen attack error gave the game to Pacific. The game featured eight of the match's 13 ties.
Gonzaga held a 4-1 edge in game three before the Tigers trimmed the deficit to one at 10-9 on an Elman kill. The Bulldogs responded with a 4-0 run, but Pacific again brought the margin to one, 17-16, on a Skylar Wine spike. However, another 4-0 Bulldog run sparked Gonzaga to score eight of the final 10 points, leading to a seven-point, set three victory.
The Tigers tallied three of the first four points in game four and later led 7-5 off a Feldsher kill before Gonzaga answered with four-straight points, as the Bulldogs would not again trail in the match. Trailing 23-20, Pacific put together three-straight points with consecutive kills by Feldsher and Elman which preceded an Andie Shelton service ace to tie the set, but a Tiger attack error and Ferris kill ended the match.
Ferris ended with 15 kills and eight digs. Allen had 13 kills and nine digs. Faith Smith and Tessie Powers each posted a double-double. Smith netted 13 digs and 21 assists, while Powers added 12 and 19. Morgan Douglass came up with 19 digs. Oppio had nine block assists.
Elman poured in a double-double with 14 kills and 15 digs. Baptista had a team-high 15 kills. Katrin Gotterba recorded a match-high 24 digs. Jessica Diederich and Shelton dished out 24 and 20 assists, respectively. Fleming had seven kills and eight block assists. Elman also had six block assists, while Feldsher tallied five.
Pacific travels to Portland on Saturday. First serve is set for 1 p.m. PT.
