Last-Second Goal Gives Pacific 3-2 Win

Box Score

Davis, Calif. – The Pacific Tigers won in dramatic fashion over the UC Davis Aggies Friday, scoring with seven seconds left in the game to get the 3-2 victory.  Alicia Muiños two goals led the Tigers to the win that put them at 10-4 on the season and 1-1 in conference.  Muiños tallied her ninth and 10th goals of the season, to become the third Tiger with double-digit goals this year, joining Savannah Burns (12) and Marguerite van Wyk (15).

Even with Pacific's early pressure, it was Davis that scored the game's first goal.  The Aggies redirected a cross in front to score, making it 1-0 at 21:26.

The Tigers drew a green card immediately after conceding the goal.  While they didn't score with the advantage, Pacific took control of the ball, earning two corners and putting up three shots in the next four minutes.

Pacific earned another corner at the conclusion of the first half. Burns and Kyleigh Morrison each had shots with Morrison's coming on the rebound to start the attack.  The Tigers would end up with four untimed corners and five shots before tying the game on their sixth untimed shot attempt.

It was Muiños who had the goal, her ninth of the year.  Van Wyk shot the ball off the input.  The ball bounced around near the goalmouth as a scrum formed, with Muiños getting control just long enough to knock it in.

The beginnings of the second half saw a possession battle between the two teams, broken up only by a breakaway by the Tigers that saw the ball bounce just out of reach of Muiños, who was all alone going in on goal.  Pacific had the first shots of the half coming off a corner, with van Wyk and Rylee Comeau both denied by the goalie.

Pacific's ball domination continued for much of the second half, forcing a Davis timeout with 19:46 remaining.

That timeout did little to change the tide of the game as Pacific took their first lead just over a minute later.  Burns fired in a low pass from high above the circle.  Leah Cofer fought in and found the ball on the run, tipping it past the goalie for her first of the season.

Muiños and van Wyk had a breakaway that was stopped by a foul with nothing but the goal in front of them.  A penalty corner was awarded out of it, with the Tigers getting two shots saved away.

The downpour of Tiger offense continued unabated but Davis' Beth Lee stopped every shot thrown at her, keeping the score at 2-1.  The Aggies could manage just one shot in the first 30 minutes of the second half before pulling their goalie.

Davis tied the game on a penalty stroke awarded with four minutes left.  The Aggies made heavy contact with several Tigers as they carried the ball into the circle with the stroke being the final call.  Davis' Kelley Kramer tied the game from there, going low to her left.

The dramatic finish continued with Muiños scoring with just seven seconds left in the game, taking the lead once again.  Burns carried the ball all the way up the right side of the field before feeding in a cross.  Muiños stopped it and turned under heavy pressure.  Her shot went low and beat the diving Davis goalie for her second of the game, giving Pacific the last-second victory.

Pacific returns home on Sunday for their first home game in a month as they take on Stanford at 2:00 pm.
