Women's Hoops Wins Fifth Straight Over Pepperdine

Stockton, Calif. - Four Tigers scored in double-figures as the Pacific women's basketball team used a fourth-quarter surge for a 65-62 win over Pepperdine Thursday night at the Alex G. Spanos Center, the Tigers fifth win in five meetings with the Waves since the Pacific joined the WCC.

Desire Finnie led Pacific with 15 points and a career-high tying nine rebounds. GeAnna Luaulu-Summers scored 11 of her 13 points in the fourth quarter while Emily Simons and Hailie Eackles each added 10 points. Najah Queenland added eight rebounds, tying her career high, and four assists to go with six points.

Pacific improves to 9-7 overall, 2-3 in West Coast Conference play while Pepperdine falls to 5-10 overall, 1-4 in WCC action.

The Tigers answered a third-quarter slump with a 17-4 run to open the fourth quarter, sparked by a trio of three-pointers from Luaulu-Summers. Pacific hit 7-of-14 and 9-of-10 from the free throw line in the final period.

Pacific opened with a 5-0 lead as Finnie posted a lay-up, and Eackles knocked down three-pointer. Finnie tallied again for a 7-2 lead, but the Waves came back with an 8-0 run led by six from Erica Ogwumike. After GeAnna Luaulu-Summers hit a jumper, Pepperdine stretched the lead to six at 15-9 on a bucket inside from Ogwumike. Ameela Li and Emily Simons posted lay-ins as theTigers trimmed the margin to 17-13 at the end of the first quarter.

Li and Simons struck again inside to open the second and tie the game at 17-17. Simons answered a jumper from Kelsey Brockway with a lay-up before Finnie and Ogwumike traded two post scores each. Najah Queenland answered another Ogwumike basket with a lay-up tying the game at 25-25.

Butler added a three-pointer and a Queenland lay-in gave the Tigers a 30-27 lead with a minute to go in the half, but Devin Stanback finished off and and-one to tie the game going into halftime.

The Tigers shot a tick better than the Waves in the first half, 41 percent (14-of-34) to 40 percent (12-for-30). But the Waves led the turnover battle, 9-7. Pacific held a 22-17 rebounding edge but the Tigers didn't attempt a free throw while Pepperdine hit 6-of-7  in the half.

Pacific opened the second half with nine straight field goal misses, but the Tigers grabbed six offensive rebounds as the misses came on three prolonged possessions. The posted four straight points before Finnie took the lid off and Eackles connected on a pair from the free throw line to tie the game at 34-34.

Ogwumike and Stanback posted lay-ups for Pepperdine as the Waves led 40-36, Queenland added free throws, but the Waves closed the third quarter up 42-38. Pacific shot just 1-of-19 in the period, but 6-of-6 from the free throw line to only trail by four.

Oddly, Pacific also suffered a 1-for-19 shooting skid in the Tigers first WCC win of the year, also at home, against San Francisco.

Finnie opened the fourth quarter with a pair of free throws, and Luaulu-Summers drained a three from the wing to give Pacific a 45-44 lead. Luaulu-Summers added two more three-pointers.

The Tigers led by 10 on Eackles' three with 3:59 to play, but Paige Fescke hit a three for the Waves and an and-one from Allie Green trimmed Pacific's lead to 58-54 with 3:03 remaining. Butler connected on a turnaround jumper in the paint, but Fecske scored on the run to trimmed the Pacific lead to 60-58.  

Luaulu-Summers hit a pair of free throws but Fecske answered with a jumper with 25 seconds left. Eackles hit a pair from the stripe, but the Tigers were whistled for a foul with 8 seconds to go. Fescke converted both from the line.

With a two-point lead, Finnie was fouled and hit the second free throw - after the Tigers had hit their first 14 of the game before a miss - as Pacific led by three. On Pepperdine's last chance, and Queenland denied a good look, and the Waves couldn't get a three attempt off before the buzzer.

Erica Ogwumike led Pepperdine with 20 points, while Fescke and Green each added nine.

The Tigers held the Waves to 1-of-12 from behind the three-point line and are holding oppoinents to a .254 percentage from deep this season (72-of-284).

Pacific is back in action on Saturday as the Tigers play host to Loyola Marymount at 2 p.m.
