Tigers' Win Streak Over SMC Snapped By Gaels

Stockton, Calif. - Hailie Eackles posted a career-high 28 points while Najah Queenland added a career-high 16, but Saint Mary's outscored the Pacific women's basketball team 30-to-5 from the free throw line for a 82-73 win Saturday.

The Gaels posted their first win over the Tigers since Pacific joined  the West Coast Conference and snapped Pacific's five-game win streak in the series, dating back to 2011.

Mauriana Clayton added seven points while Emily Simons added six and Erin Butler five. Eackles also tied a career-best with seven rebounds.

Pacific was whistled for 29 fouls and attempted just eight free throws while the Gaels connected on 28-of-33 from the stripe.

The Tigers out-shot Saint Mary's 43 percent (30-of-70) to 40 percent (24-of-60), and forced 14 turnovers against just 11 miscues. Pacific also doubled-up Saint Mary's in made threes, 8 to 4, with the Tigers taking double the attempts.

But the free throw disparity was too much for the Tigers to overcome, as Pacific falls to 9-9 overall and 2-5 in West Coast Conference Play.

Saint Mary's improves to 14-4 overall and 5-2 in WCC play. Lauren Nicholson and Devon Brookshire led the Gaels with 22 points each, while Devyn Galland added 15 points. Brookshire grabbed 16 rebounds while Nicholson grabbed 10 as both players finished with double-doubles.

Luaulu-Summers opened the game with a three-pointer and Simons answered a Megan McKay lay-up with a bucket inside. Eackles and Brookshire traded lay-ups, but the Gaels tallied six-straight points. Finnie connected on a baseline jumper, but Turner connected on a three from the corner for a 15-11 Saint Mary's lead.

Eackles drained back-to-back threes to pull Pacific within two at 19-17. Hannah Kaser answered with a three for the Gaels before Mauriana Clayton scored inside. The Gaels posted hit three free throws to close the quarter with a 27-19 lead.

Eackles opened the second quarter with a fast break jumper in the paint. Clayton added an and-one off a feed from Najah Queenland. Eli Lopez Sagrera finished amid contact inside. Saint Mary's stretched the lead to 36-27 by connecting from the free throw line as the Gaels pounded the ball inside and fouls mounted for Pacific.

Queenland took a steal coast to coast, and Simons completed a backdoor lay-up to cut the deficit to 36-31.

The Tigers held Saint Mary's on a 3:52 scoring drought and 1-of-9 shooting and Butler's jumper pulled Pacific within three, at 33-36. But Nicholson hit an open jumper and Devyn Galland hit a three-pointer and a pair of free throws to restore an eight-point Saint Mary's advantage.

Eackles hit her third three-pointer of the game before the half, as Saint Mary's led 47-38 at the break.

The Tigers shot 46 percent in the first half, better than the Gaels' 42 percent. But SMC controlled the glass with a 25-16 edge in rebounding. Pacific held a slight margin in points in the paint, 20-18, but the Gaels got to the free throw line with ease, with 16-of-18 free throws to the Tigers' 2-of-3 from the stripe.

In the third, Queenland answered a Brookshire lay-up with a runner. Queenland's and-one pulled Pacific within eight. After a bucket from the Gaels, Eackles drilled another three-pointer to bring the Tigers within 56-50 with 3:25 to go in the third. Queenland cut the margin to four, but Nicholson answered with a jumper. Ameela Li found Clayton for a backdoor lay-in, but the Gaels carried an eight-point lead at the break, 62-54.

The Gaels pushed the lead up to 11 on an and-one from McKay, and to 13 on a bucket from Nicholson. Luaulu-Summers answered with a lay-up, but the Gaels drove uncontested to the rim, posted a stop on defense and were bailed out with the shot clock dwindling to lead by 14 with 3:26 to go, and curb Pacific's momentum.

Eackles hit a three in transition to bring the Tigers within seven, but the Gaels closed it out from the free throw line, despite a late three from Butler.

The Tigers will hit the road for games at Portland (Thursday) and Gonzaga (Saturday) next week.
