Box Score STOCKTON, CALIF.- The Pacific Tigers field hockey team defeated the Bryant Bulldogs 4-0 Friday afternoon, starting their season with a nonconference win. Pacific scored all four goals in the first 20 minutes of the game, opening the scoring at 3:28 with a goal from Alicia Muiños. Laura Pujade went the distance in net for the Tigers, earning her first win after making four saves.
"We're very happy...we scored four beautiful goals and played some really really good hockey for 25 minutes," coach Andy Smith said about Pacific's early flurry of goals.
Muiños opened the scoring with a shot from high in the circle that beat the goalie and found its way to the right corner of the net. Savannah Burns assisted on the goal. The Barcelona native scored four goals last season as a freshman and had "a really good game for us on a forward line today," in the words of Smith.
Hannah Tvergyak scored her first goal as Tiger seven minutes later at 10:55. Tvergyak had three assists as a freshman last year. Her goal came on a shot that went across the face of the goal and into the far corner, beating the goalie. The shot came as another Tiger cut in toward goal, giving Tvergyak the chance to send a pass to the goal mouth, only to have that pass find the net itself. Kyleigh Morrison had the assist.
Pacific's third goal came from Leah Cofer. Sidney Brooks sent a cross past Bryant's goalie that found Cofer on the run. Cofer was able to redirect the ball with a diving hit that sent it in to make it 3-0.
Cofer matched her goal total from 2014 just a minute later, scoring her second of the game. Cofer sent a shot through the upright pads of the goalie deep in the circle as she fought off the pressure from the defenders.
"We'll practice hard Saturday and be prepared for Syracuse on Monday and see how it goes," said Smith.
Pacific will take the turf again on Monday at 11:00 am against the No. 4 Syracuse Orange. Fans can follow Pacific field hockey online on Twitter at @PacificTigersFH and on Instagram at pacifictigersfh.
