Early Runs Too Much As Pacific Drops The Final At Gonzaga

Box Score

Spokane, Wash. - Falling behind early, the Tigers could not recover as Gonzaga held on to take the series-clinching finale at Patterson Baseball Complex, 6-3, on Sunday afternoon. With the loss Pacific (12-35, 9-15 WCC) dropped their second-straight game to the Bulldogs (23-25, 12-12 WCC) who remained in contention for the postseason with the series victory.

Picking up where they left off the night before, the Zags continued their onslaught of extra-base hits with a pair of RBI doubles in their first trip to the plate to take a quick lead. The damage in the inning all came with two outs as starter Michael Benson (2-4) was one pitch away from a fast 1-2-3 inning but hit Taylor Jones with a 1-2 pitch to start the two-out rally for the Bulldogs.

From there, Gonzaga would tack on three more runs over the next three innings, scoring a single run in the second before grabbing two more on one swing of the bat in the fourth to push the lead to five. The big swing came off the bat of Mitch Gonsulos as the senior third basemen hit his second home run in as many days for his first hit of the afternoon.

The five runs would all be charged to Benson as the senior went 5.0 IP while allowing seven hits in the loss. Gonzaga tacked on a sixth run in the seventh without the benefit of a hit out of the infield to push the lead at the time back to five runs at 6-1.

The Tigers would strike for their first run of the game in the fifth thanks in part to a throwing error by the Zags. After singles by J.J. Wagner and Tyler Sullivan, Pacific scored its first unearned run of the game on a ground ball to short as the potential double play throw was wide of first allowing Wagner to score uncontested. Sullivan's single was his second of the game as he finished with two of Pacific's seven hits in the game.

Three innings later, the yips would get to the Bulldogs again as a pair of errors allowed the Tigers to plate two more runs, cutting a five-run deficit to just three at 6-3.

Throughout the game, Pacific had a handful of chances to get to Bulldog starter Eli Morgan (1-0) with runners in scoring position early, but each time Morgan was able to hold the Tigers at bay and off the scoreboard. In total, Morgan went 7.2 IP in his first collegiate victory as he scattered six hits and allowed three unearned runs while striking out five and walking one. In relief, David Bigelow (9) picked up the save as he threw a scoreless ninth inning while allowing one hit to pinch hitter Justin Thaxton in the inning.

The Tigers will be forced to regroup in a hurry as they head to Seattle to take on Seattle University on Monday, May 11, in their final out-of-conference contest of the 2015 season. The game is scheduled for 6:00 pm on the campus of Bellevue College.
