Box Score Stockton, Calif. - Leading into the seventh, the Tigers faltered late in the field and at the plate as Cal Poly took the opening game of the weekend, 11-3, at Klein Family Field. Pacific (0-12) continued its opening season skid while the Mustangs (3-7) rebounded after being snowed out of action last week in Texas.
For Pacific, mistakes cost the Tigers dearly on Friday night as the Mustangs used four errors to plate six unearned run and turn a potential Pacific win into a break away Cal Poly victory. The Tigers were not without their chances early against the Mustangs' starter, Casey Bloomquist, as they loaded the bases in the second inning but came away with just one run. The one run in the inning tied the game at two after the Mustangs had jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first thanks to timely hitting and a defensive miscue by the Tigers in the field.
The tying run was possible for the Tigers in the second after plating one in the first as they were able to score against Bloomquist without the benefit of a hit. Senior Tyler Sullivan scored the run after reaching on a walk before coming into score later on a ground ball to the right side by his younger brother, Brett Sullivan. The older Sullivan made things happen in the inning almost single handedly as he stole second and forced a wild pitch with his presence to move to third.
The Tigers would score again in the fifth with some help from Bloomquist again as the Mustang starter allowed freshman Jed Sprague to reach on a wild pitch strike out. Sprague would come into score the go-ahead run on a safety squeeze bunt that turned into a single by T. Sullivan after moving into scoring position on a bunt and a balk. Sprague also had the second run of the game for the Tigers after picking up the first hit of the day with a single to center field.
The run would be the Tigers last as the Mustangs blew the game open late by scoring five runs in the seventh and four more in the eighth. The seventh started with a missed fly ball in left by the Tigers as the error got the ball rolling for Cal Poly. An inning later, the Mustangs took advantage of a two-out error by the Tigers to score four more times, putting the game out of reach.
Sophomore Will Lydon (0-4) suffered the tough luck loss as he gave the Tigers a quality start with 6.0 innings pitched while allowing just two unearned runs of the four that were charged to him. On the other side of the bump, Bloomquist was taken off the hook by his offense that came up with 14 hits against the Tigers to score their 11 runs. In relief, Danny Zandona (1-1) grabbed the win as he shutdown Pacific's offense for 2.1 innings while striking out five.
The Tigers and Mustangs meet for the second time on Saturday, March 7 as the afternoon game is scheduled for 2:00 pm at Klein Family Field.
