Early Rally Falls Short As The Tigers Fall 7-4 At Nevada

Box Score

Reno, Nev. - A bad start to the game put the Tigers in a hole they could not recover from despite an early rally as Pacific Baseball fell to Nevada, 7-4, on Sunday, March 1. The Tigers (0-10) dropped their third series of the season with the loss while the Wolf Pack (9-1) improved upon their program's best start.

Playing from behind immediately, the Tigers put together one of their better offensive showings early in the contest as they hit their way back into a game that nearly spiraled out of control in the first two innings of play. Down five after just two innings, the Tigers clawed back into the game with crooked numbers in the third and the fourth innings of play thanks to six hits and four doubles.

In the third, the Tigers got rolling thanks to the first of two hits off the bat of junior Louis Mejia who finished a perfect 2-for-2 with two sacrifice bunts. After moving to second on a sacrifice, Mejia scored the Tigers' first run of the game when junior J.P. Yakel doubled down the right field line. Yakel would later score on a double to down the line by junior J.J. Wagner. For the Tigers, the two runs would be all they would get as the Wolf Pack starter, Christian Stolo, pitched his way out of a one-out, bases loaded jam to end the inning.

Despite missing out on some runs in the third, the Tigers went back to work in the fourth when sophomore Parker Klein led the inning off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice. Just as he did an inning prior, Yakel delivered an RBI double, posting his third and final hit of the day. Again, Yakel scored from second, this time on an RBI double by junior Brett Sullivan as the Tiger shortstop picked up his first RBI of the season. The rally would end one batter later with the Tigers down just one run, the closest they would get the rest of the way.

The five early runs posted off of the Tigers were scored against a pair of Pacific veterans as junior Jake Jenkins (0-2) suffered his worst outing as a starter as he gave up three runs and three hits in five batters faced without recording an out despite getting to two strikes on all five hitters. In relief, senior Michael Hager stopped the bleeding as he put down a bases loaded, no-out rally, in the first with only one inherited running coming into score. However, he would get into his own trouble in the second with a bases loaded, no out jam that was helped out by an error and a defensive miscue that resulted in two runs scoring in the inning.

Hager would go on to pitch the next three innings, relinquishing a pair of runs in the fifth after the Tigers had pulled within one run. The damage was done primarily by the bottom of the order as Jordan Devencenzi and Cal Stevenson kick started both two run rallies in the second and fifth innings of play. From there, however, junior Sean Bennetts shut down the Wolf Pack for the final three innings as he worked out of the pen for the first time in his Tiger career.

On the other side, Barry Timko (1-0) was awarded the win out of the pen despite going just 0.2 IP as he shut down the Tigers' threat in the fourth and preserved Nevada's early lead. Cameron Rowland (1), the fourth pitcher of the day for the Wolf Pack was awarded his first save of the year as the lefty stifled Pacific's offense for the final 3.2 innings while giving up just two hits.

The Tigers go for their first win of the season on get-away day on Monday, March 2 as the teams play a make up game for the game lost on Saturday due to snow. The game is scheduled for 1:00 pm at Peccole Park.
