Irvine, Calif. - The No. 19 Pacific women's water polo team dropped a pair of games to top 10 teams to open the UC Irvine Invitational Saturday. The Tigers fell to No. 1 Stanford, 13-3, in the first round, and 9-6 to No. 8 San Jose State in the consolation quarterfinals.
Gracie Smith scored three goals on the day for Pacific (2-5). Anna Kertes added two goals, while Taylor, Megan Torre and Kelsey Carter and Rachel Kreiger each added one.
Smith tallied twice against San Jose State, but found themselves down 5-2 at the half. Despite scoring three in the third quarter, the Spartans held on as Thompson made 14 saves.
Michele Relton posted 12 saves in the cage for Pacific.
Against the top-ranked Stanford, Gracie Smith, Anna Kertes and Kelsey Carter posted goals for Pacific. But the Cardinal jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. The Tigers tallied a goal in each in the first three quarters, but the Cardinal tacked on three in the second and three in the third.
Pacific will face either No. 13 UC Davis or No. 14 Michigan on Sunday at 11:45 a.m. at Corona del Mar High School.
