Women's Hoops Nipped By Utah State

Logan, Utah - The Pacific women's basketball team fell at Utah State, 78-70, as the Aggies slipped out in front in the final minutes.

Hailie Eackles scored a career-high 24 points while Eli Lopez Sagrera tallied 18 points and nine rebounds.

In a game that featured 14 ties and 18 lead changes, Utah State took the lead for good on a three-pointer by Funda Nakkasoglu with 5:10 left in the fourth.  Nakkasoglu finished with a game-high 37 points.

Freshman Ameela Li scored a career-high seven points while Najah Queenland added six with five rebounds.

Eackles turned in her second-straight 20-point game, hitting six of 11 from three-pointer range, and tied her career high (set last year at UC Davis).  

The game opened with Eackles answering a Utah State three-pointer with a three of her own, and Lopez Sagrera scored inside for an 8-7 lead. Eackles added a three-pointer and and lay-up as the Tigers led 13-7, and a lay-in from Lopez Sagrera pit Pacific up 15-9 before the Aggies answered back with back-to-back buckets. Erin Butler canned a three-pointer on the Tigers last possession of the quarter for a 18-13 lead.

In the second, the Tigers took their largest lead as Eackles knocked down another three for a 23-15 advantage. Tijana Djukic responded for the Aggies with a three, and brought Utah State within three before Lopez Sagrera tallied inside. Nakkasoglu scored back-to-back baskets to tie the game at 30-30. Pacific took a 32-30 lead into the break on a pair of free throws from Lopez Sagrera.

Eackles hit a three for a 35-32 lead early in the third, but Katie Toole gave the Aggies the advantage with a three-pointer. After a pair of throws from Queenland, Djukic tallied and Queenland hit another pair for a 43-42 lead.

Emily Simons finished inside for a three-point lead, but the Aggies went up in front 48-47. Eackles had another three as the Tigers led by two with 2:25 to go in the third. A three from Li provided a 57-56 Pacific lead with 24 seconds left in the quarter, but Nakkasoglu tied the game for the 10th time and gave the Aggies a one-point lead after three with a pair of free throws.

Neither team led by more than two in the first six minutes of the fourth quarter, as Eackles gave the Tigers a 62-60 lead with another triple, and Djukic and Butler traded lay-ups as the Tigers led 66-64. Nakkasoglu's free throws tied the game at 66-66 with 5:41 to go, but Luaulu-Summers responded with a pair of free throws. Nakkasoglu answered with a three-pointer for a 69-68 Utah State lead.

After a lay-up from Eackles, Nakkasoglu hit a pair for free throws with 2:42 to play to take a 71-70 lead. The Tigers came up empty on a pair of three-point attempts and the Aggies added a pair of free throws for a 73-70 lead. After a missed three attempt by Pacific, Utah State used the full shot clock and grabbed an offensive board and the final margin was settled by free throws.

The Tigers hit 11-of-29 in each half for a 37.9 shooting percentage. Utah State shot 36.2 percent (25-of-69).

Pacific falls to 2-2 on the season, while Utah State moves to 2-1.

The Tigers are back in action on Wednesday at North Carolina, in a game that tips at 2 p.m. ET, 11 a.m. PT.
