Tigers Guarantee Winning Season with 4-2 Victory

Box Score

Stockton, Calif. – The Pacific Tigers field hockey team defeated the UC Davis Aggies 4-2 Sunday afternoon, assuring they will end the year with a winning record for the first time since 2006.  The Tigers are now 9-6 overall and 3-1 in the America East Conference with two games remaining on their schedule against California and Stanford.  UC Davis falls to 7-10 on the season and 0-4 in conference after the loss.

"I'm so proud of the effort, we've taken care of one of our objectives this season of [finishing with] a winning record," said Coach Andy Smith.  "People stepped up all over the place…Malia Robertson was exceptional again today." The team has now improved their record in each of the last three years.

Pacific's victory came on Senior Day as the Tigers honored their five seniors who will be graduating from the program this year.  Kristen Doting, Kelsey Gulledge, Robertson, Nicole Laskosky, and Hannah and Molly Bettencourt were all playing in their last home game for the Tigers.  "What a way to finish our home slate for our seniors," said Smith, who was extremely proud of the effort put forth in the game.

Alicia Muiños scored her third goal of the season to break open the game just 3:58 in.  Muiños was waiting in front of the net and was able to corral a rebound and send it in after UC Davis' Erica Cohen was left sprawled on the turf after making the initial save.  The goal came unassisted.

Not long after that, Rylee Comeau scored, giving her two goals this weekend, including the game-winner over No. 12 Stanford on Friday.  Sidney Brooks broke away from the defense thanks to a stretch pass from Pacific's backline.  Brooks carried the ball up the wing before threading a cross into the box that was perfectly played to the charging Comeau.  Comeau knocked the ball in for her fourth goal of the season.

UC Davis was able to cut the deficit on a penalty corner after time had expired.  The first shot was blocked by Pacific's defense but the ball found its way to Danielle Koehne, who scored from a sharp angle to make it 2-1 at halftime.

"We started out on fire," said Smith about the early scoring for the Tigers.  "The game changed with that goal [for UC Davis], but we still played our gameplan."

Pacific kept the pressure on once the second half began, scoring again at 38:48.  The Tigers earned back-to-back corners while playing a man up before a play in front of the net ended with a penalty stroke for Pacific.  Ali Campos scored on the stroke, making it 3-1 with her fifth goal of the season.

The Aggies were able to create more offense and cut their deficit back to one thanks to another series of penalty corners at 56:57.  UC Davis ended the game with 12 penalty corners, including eight in the second half, and scored both their goals off of such plays.  Jamie Garcia scored the second Aggies goal with a shot from high in the circle that went into the net in the low right corner.  Eden Borsack and Hannah Drawbridge assisted.

Savannah Burns put the game away with one minute left when she scored off a Pacific corner to make it 4-2 and seal the victory. Muiños and Hannah Tvergyak assisted on the goal, with Burns' shot skirting past a diving Cohen.

The Tigers will have a week off before their next game, with the only game this week coming in the annual Alumni Game on Saturday, October 24 at 2:00 pm.  After that, Pacific will return to America East play with a game against California at 2:00 pm on October 28.  The game will be played at the Pacific Field Hockey Turf.
