Honolulu, Hawai'i - The Pacific men's tennis team dropped the first of two matches in Honolulu with a 4-3 loss at Hawai'i on Saturday, Jan. 24. The Tigers are now 0-3, while Hawai'i improved to 1-1.
The Tigers evened the doubles point contest with a victory by Sem Verbeek and Alex Hamilton at No. 1, before Hawai'i took the point by winning at No. 2. Pacific had singles victories from Jose Chamba, Alex Hamilton and Ashwin Sharma and were on the verge of the victory. UH's Nils Schuhmann defeated Miguel Diaz 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in the final match to finish to clinch the victory.
"Today was a tough day," said Head Coach Ryan Redondo. "It's never easy to lose 3-4, especially after having multiple match points in doubles that could have put us with the win. Miguel did a great job to come back and win the 2nd set to set up a 3rd set with the match tied at 3-3. After some high level tennis he cramped up and Hawaii took advantage of it and stepped up. We are far from playing our level of tennis and yet we are still on positions to win which is encouraging. Alex, Jose, and Ashwin came out strong in singles and did a great job in holding a presence. Tomorrow is another test for us to seize the opportunity."
